Breast development - need help from mums of girls

Am a bit concerned now as I mentioned to friends at a Virgin Vie party tonight that 10 year old DD seems to be developing boobs. Well one on the left side so I thought. She said she felt as if she had a bruise a couple of nights ago and when I examined where it was sore there was a definate raised lump. Only thing is that it is to the left of her nipple, not underneath it. The mums of the girls in the room all said that breast growth starts directly underneath the nipple. This lump is completely outwith the nipple. Now I am showing my ignorance. Should I get this checked out by the doctor or can breast development start in any area of the breast. She has no other signs of puberty.

Oh, mears - wish I could help - was never so intimately involved with my DDs' boobs when they started growing!

A lump in just one place that feels to her like a bruise does sound more like a knock than puberty but I am actually just as ignorant as you - failing any other more expert advice I would wait a couple more days and then go to your GP.

80sMum · 09/10/2004 00:06

Yes, I would have it checked out, especially if it's painful. It might be perfectly OK, but it doesn't sound quite right to me. Best to put your (and dd's) mind at rest.

mears · 09/10/2004 00:19

Well I am making myself worry now because after searching on the internet I have found that buds start under the nipple. She has a definate hard lump to the left of the nipple. Will get it checked out during the week. Why do these worries come at the weekend when the GP surgery is closed?

any mums of girls on this morning?

Sorry mears - haven't a clue, but I'd be concerned if she were my dd, so deserves a bump!

edam · 09/10/2004 13:29

No idea here either Mears, all I can do is agree with everyone saying get it checked out. Sorry.

lou33 · 09/10/2004 14:33

I just asked dd1 if she would let me examine her boobs so I could compare for you Mears (!) Her nipples are central to the lumps iyswim. I'm sure it is nothing to worry about, but if it is still the same after the weekend, pop her down to the doc to put your mind at rest.

AuntyQuated · 09/10/2004 15:16

my dd is only 8 and a lump appeared directly under her nipple and she complained that it was sore; took her to GP who said it was the beginning if breast development! poor thing at 8
but he didn't say whether breast development HAd to start under nipple or not. i would get it checked out.

mears · 09/10/2004 19:27

Thanks Lou

Have asked my friends and they remember central development under the nipple too. Will take her to GP after the weekend.

Thanks for the posts everyone.

You know you shouldn't worry, Mears. Cysts are extremely common. If a woman under 25 finds a lump it's almost always (95%+) benign. And your DD is only 10... I imagine the odds must be higher that lightening will strike your DD on her way to the GP than of her having anything nasty in there.

rosies · 10/10/2004 10:08

hi mears,

my daughter had this when she was maybe a year or so younger... quite a protuberance arent they! because she was a little younger, she didnt mind me seeing. i actually cant say if it was directly under the nipple, but i do recall it only being one side and yes... i did go to the docs!

poor dd, but then, they may as well get used to these indignities! we had a man doctor too, but he was very good and understanding and said it was a breast bud.

i cant remember how long it stayed but i do recall it disappeared. and then obviously, nature takes it course and the real boobs comes along.

dont feel silly about going to the doctor. i daresay thats what it is, but it never hurts to check these things out. you know yourself, as a midwife, you probably get asked the most fundamental of questions but you are happy to answer and alleviate worries, just as your doctor will be.

hello mears I haven't looked that closely because it might embarass them but I think both dd and her friends on sleepovers seem to be developing general swelling rather than lumps.

mears · 11/10/2004 23:13

I have an appointment with female GP on Tuesday - will let you know what she says.

just seen this thread - when dd's boobies started growing it was as though her nipples were just "full" but I think you're doing the right thing taking her to docs and I am sure it is just "buds". Also dd had developing breasts before any other signs of puberty.

JanH · 11/10/2004 23:21

Good luck, mears - hope it's just lopsided development! (We can't all do it by the book, after all...)

Hi mears. My oldest dd is developing rapidly as we speak, but yes, she does seem to be growing under the nipple. I whisked her off to the docs when there were the first signs as I wasnt sure if it was ok as she too was experiencing pain, and the doc was very understanding but explained she was just growing. I know this isn't a huge help to you, but I would encourage you to make an appt with your doc - if only to put your mind at rest.

rosies · 12/10/2004 09:55

how did it go, mears? all well i hope.

mears · 12/10/2004 12:04

Stupid me - the appointment is on THURSDAY - couldn't get the female GP any sooner. Thanks for the messgaed

lol i'm as stupid... when i posted that last message i was convinced it was wednesday!

mears · 14/10/2004 11:24

Just back from GP who was lovely with her. She thinks it is a breast bud albeit not directly under the nipple. We have to go back in a month's time.

OP posts:
JanH · 14/10/2004 12:36

Oh, good, mears - that sounds reassuring

mears · 11/11/2004 17:02

Wee update. Saw GP today (nearly cancelled) because it is obviously now breast development. The 'lump' has now expanded to under the nipple. Other side is growing too. Panic over .
