Please help me fix my posture issue?!

Hi,

Hope everyone is keeping safe with this pandemic.

I am getting married early next year and have this issue with my posture (photos attached!).

  1. is there a name for what this is/the area this affects?

  2. could anyone recommend how I can fix this through either a good brace or yoga or something?? I’ve seen some back braces but they seem to target the lower back as opposed to where my issue is.

I appreciate any help!

Thank you in advance :)

Is it text neck?? Do you spend a lot of time looking down at your phone? Yoga or pilates is great for strengthening posture. Also horse riding is actually really good as you're sitting up straight whilst on the horse and holding the reins with elbows in line with shoulders.

Dowager's hump?

Look into kyphosis and the exercises to correct it.

A basic exercise is to lie on your stomach and lift the back of your neck.
You carry on looking at the floor while your head goes up.
It strengthens the muscles that ought to be holding your head up.
Another thing is to just keep thinking “back of the neck long”
Allow yourself a little double chin whilst you are improving.

Lift your screen higher so you have to sit tall to see it but remember
Back of the neck long. Don’t allow your head to tilt back.

Off to do the exercise myself!

To reallycorrect what you’ve got you’ll need to learn quite a bit/ get better at Pilates.

SwedishEdith · 02/05/2020 17:54

Is it not just about being conscious of pulling your shoulders back and imagining a string or something is pulling the top of your head up? I don't think it's to do with texting - it used to be called a widow's hump but you look quite young. Maybe look at some simple ballet exercises to make you conscious of your posture more?

huntinthehornybacktoad · 02/05/2020 20:16

apparently if you think about pulling the shoulders back then you can end up just briefly disguising the underlying problem which is the curve of the spine (I'm not an expert but this is what I've read). The shoulders are only forward because the spine is forward.

Agree with pilates. You need to strengthen upper back and drop shoulders.

Seaweed42 · 03/05/2020 00:53

A weekly yoga or Pilates class and stick with it.

I had a very similar posture sorted by an osteopath and some stretching exercises.

Osteopath said it was purely because of my bad posture. She asked me to stand up straight and I realised that I actually had no idea what standing up straight felt like any more as my shoulders were too tight to actually relax down.

This was a few years ago and now I can stand up straight!

An osteopath is probably not an option right now, but keep it in mind!

Place marking so I can come back to this thread - I have a similar issue!

justastudent · 03/05/2020 17:36

Thank you all so much for your insight! I’ve looked into it and will be starting yoga/pilates/stretches for it. Hopefully will see an improvement!

Anyone with experience with this - has yoga/stretching been enough or would it be worthwhile to go to a chiropractor?

You need to strengthen your lats- it looks as if your neck muscles are over developed and your core/shoulders underdeveloped
Have you been checked by a doctor for any underlying kyphosis
