Calling mums of girls...

What age did your DDs first develop breast buds? My 8 year old told me her nipple was "sore underneath" when she touched it.. I had a look and realised she has a small lump directly under the nipple in question (just the one.)

Having googled this, I have seen lots of info suggesting that onset of puberty is not at all abnormal from 8 years onwards and that "breast buds" can appear (and sometimes disappear" apparently, any time from then onwards and sometimes earlier.. and not be associated with precocious puberty.

Thing is DD is a skinny little thing and not very tall for her age either. I imagined that she would definitely not be one of the earlier ones to start puberty. I wasn't myself.. didn't start my periods til I was 14. Csn't for the life of me remember when I first developed breat buds.. but have a feeling it wasn't until the end of primary school.. and I didn't need a bra until the end of first year secondary.. (and don't think I really NEEDED it then.. my mum just took pity on me and got me one because my friends all had them! )

DD said she's had this for about a week she thinks. I will probably get it checked by the doctor but I wanted to ask Mners with daughters of a similar age and older, when their daughters first got a lump under one or both nipples.

DD is nine in Dec.

Yes it's a breast bud. GP confirmed it. Not sure how I feel about that and not sure that's even relevant!

DD said when we got out "So it IS a boobie? Cool!" Bless. She is such a little 8 year old.. so not the type to be an early developer.. although thnking back to her baby days, she sat, crawled and walked early so perhaps this is part of that trend..

GP said it was "just the beginning of the puberty process" and that nothing else was likely to happen for quite a while expect a lump in the other one, and the soreness subsiding.

Really wasn't expecting it yet, but glad it's all fine, normal and nothing to worry about.

Hope this doubly reassures all the other mums of similarly aged little girls.

Thanks, Shiny. Mine was an early-at-everything girl too!
Glad you are reassured and saved me a trip to the docs too!

very strange that i have just found this thread as my 9 year old juts mebtioned this last night. saying it was just the one that started to hurt. she is quite normal size but is developing a j-lo butt and is alittle taller then her friends , was told at 4 that she has an unusual amount of hormone in her body and that she would start puberty early, she is 10 november

My mum works in a primary school and they have quite a lot of 10 year olds that are really developed and could quite easily pass for 14 or 15 year olds. They have a lot of 9 and 10 years olds with definite busts and periods.

My 9-year old has had one little boob growing for a good year now. It really is a proper boob, despite her also being a skinny little thing. She was very relieved when the other one finally started to hurt the other day as she was worried she'd only ever have one boob!

Your DD sounds quite normal, Shiny. My eldest started developing aged 7 and now aged 12 she's a 32E!! (Can I just add that those don't come from my side of the family, oh no! I fall out of an A-cup!)

Incidentally, when DD1 started to develop aged 7, a doctor friends suggested we look into precocious puberty as she felt it was a little early. She had all sorts of tests done and we were offered treatment, but in the event she just took a while to develop and her periods didn't start until she was 10.1, which is apparently perfectly normal. I'm glad now that we didn't go down the hormone treatment route. She's always been tall for her age and is still the tallest in her class at 5ft5in, but that won't last. The others will soon overtake her now, I think. In fact, I'm pretty sure she's stopped growing (although her bust evidently hasn't!).
