Is it normal? Blood seems v sticky during finger prick test

Hi all

I used a lancet to bleed my finger for a private health test kit. I noticed while trying to fill the little blood tube / bottle that my blood was very gloopy. It would form a stubborn dot that's almost gelatinuous and would stick to the side of the bottle. Some of the blood was runny.

I was surprised, as some of it seemed gloopy like period blood. I had a quick google and saw that it might mean i could be at risk of DVT and blood clots. I have varicose veins since i was 15 and I'm now in my 30s.

I know there are many health risks and potential causes of death but now i'm worried that I will die from a sudden blood clot in my lungs, heart or brain or something.

I would like to know:

1.whether sticky blood is normal in the situation i mentioned

  1. can the naked eye even diagnose sticky blood disease at all?!
  1. When things are back to normal, is this something i should get checked with my gp or am i being silly?

Thank you.

I have APLS, Hughes syndrome, sticky blood (all the same thing). No, it can't be diagnosed that way.

When I have a blood test (I have a lot) I try to guess how sticky my blood is from how quickly the vial fills. I am seldom right.

Blood clotting is a normal response to an injury. Platelets in the blood are activated to form a sticky plug to stop the wound from bleeding.

Untreated, my blood disorder causes my blood to clot even if there isn't a wound.

Thank you that's helpful.

Being dehydrated makes your blood like mud. Had you drunk enough prior to the test?

I have a blood clotting disorder and the stickiness of your blood during a blood test is unrelated to this sort of thing.

It sounds like you are quite anxious, I hope you're ok.

The varicose veins raise more of a concern to be honest. That’s not normal, have you see a doctor about it? Are you on the pill?

Rawantree · 21/04/2020 08:16

Maiden I was dehydrated, I had alcohol the night before and only a cup of coffee before the test. Thank you, that made me feel better.

Gnome thank you, I have seen it.

banana thanks, I'm ok now but was freaked out at the time. Thanks also for reassuring me and I hope you're well.

Regina i have looked at the NHS website. In England, the GP will not do anything about it unless there are complications. Sure they might prescribe compression stockings but I can and have bought them myself directly. I'm very veiny, have thread veins and visible veins through skin in general. I will have them sorted out at a private clinic at some point in the future.

I'm not on the pill.
