Dentist treatment during Coronavirus lockdown

Ok do my dentist is closed and my appointment two weeks ago cancelled.

I’ve now got crazy sore toothache!! Called my dentist who’s still taking calls and he has asked about it then said that if I get emergency treatment they will pull the tooth they won’t treat it!! He’s told me to try hang in and take pain killers.

I don’t want a missing tooth as I don’t want the gap! Just bloody typical this happens now!!!

Anyone else in the same boat! X

Oh I agree its a terrible situation all round, and I really think dentists have been left in an awful position without enough support at all, and thats why I'm really reluctant to challenge this. But on the other hand, I had symptoms that my infection was starting to spread and I'm relieved I got the antibiotics when I did, but I'm terrified of getting future infections while we're all in limbo which could become more serious.

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 21:30

It's unbelievable. In normal tones, our professional bodies are like DONT GIVE ANTIBIOTICS. Now... Confused

It's horrible and I've no idea what it will look like in the future.

Kel9 · 17/04/2020 09:42

Yep it must be dire straights that they are offering antibiotics. I’ve got a filling kit being delivered on amazon.. thank god! Hopefully I’ll be able to cover the sensitive tooth until I get treatment. 🙈

Five days of antibiotics and I am no better Kel.
My dentist has said there is nothing else he can do. He has prescribed diclofenac but it’s not helping.
Im so miserable.

Mrsmorton · 17/04/2020 09:58

@greenteaandchives I've learnt this morning that there are 30 hubs across London offering treatment. Where abouts are you? I can try to help find one but the provision is so patchy.

Bridecilla · 17/04/2020 10:00

I'm on day 4 of antibiotics for what I think is an abscesses. Utterly miserable isn't it :(

Greenteandchives · 17/04/2020 10:03

I’m in the SW. I know there is a hub here but I understand they will only extract. My dentist also said he didn’t think they would do that in my case anyway. My tooth is pretty solid. I have good teeth in general and my dentist feels that I should sit it out with painkillers, but I haven’t found anything that gives any relief yet. He says eventually there will be an abscess which will burst and give some respite.
I can’t eat or sleep, and my face feels like it is going to explode.

Kel9 · 17/04/2020 13:05

Do you think you need a filling? My problem is the side of my tooth needs a new filling and I get severe nerve pain. It’s horrendous but got antibiotics because the pain was spreading. I’m waiting on my delivery coming of the temporary filling and I’m hoping to get relief using that even if it’s just temporary.. just to seal it. What about trying that?

Aww sorry you’ve got an abscess I forgot so it’s slightly different. You’ll be waiting on the antibiotics kicking in.

Greenteandchives · 17/04/2020 13:43

Kel I don’t know what I’ve got, and of course the dentist on the phone is only guessing. The problem is the pain seems to shift from a bottom tooth to an upper. Surely I can’t have two teeth affected? But no I don’t think I need a filling. It hasn’t been long since my last checkup.
Hope you get your temporary filling soon and it does the job.

littlealexhorne · 17/04/2020 14:27

Just called my dentist back, and I'm being referred for an extraction. He said that in normal times my tooth would either need extraction or a root canal anyway, but that he expects that root canals will be one of the last treatments they're allowed to do again, and by the time they can my tooth could've got to the point where extraction will be the only option anyway. Gutted to be having to lose a tooth, but just hoping I can get a bridge or something when this is all over.

Greenteandchives · 17/04/2020 15:06

Oh that’s a shame, but hopefully it will get sorted. Do you know when you will be seen? I may have to go down that route myself as there is no telling when this will end.

littlealexhorne · 17/04/2020 15:27

Yes thats one of the worst parts isn't it, not knowing when normal treatment could be an option again. I'm going in on Monday morning, the only option over the weekend is a hospital 50 miles away!

Greenteandchives · 17/04/2020 15:52

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. Flowers

Kel9 · 18/04/2020 09:16

My pain is the same sometimes if feels like it’s coming from top and bottom 🙈 I put some of the temp filler on my sore tooth which you can see has started to blacken just to give it a coat... but still sore this morning! I’m coming on for two weeks solid in pain and in pain killers..not sure what else to do! We’ve been told we have another 3 week lock down.. 😑

opalescent · 18/04/2020 10:46

@littlealexhorne is it one of the urgent care hubs that is doing your extraction or a private practice? Just wondering where in the UK you are? Glad it’s getting sorted!

littlealexhorne · 18/04/2020 12:22

@opalescent I'm in the North West, its one of the dentist practices that I'm going to, they do both NHS & private treatments normally I think. I believe there's also a second place for anyone with covid symptoms, and possibly a third for anyone who's shielding too.

littlealexhorne · 20/04/2020 12:24

Well its out. Only they took it out, only to show it to me and say that what I'd thought have been a fairly big crack wasn't a crack at all, but mostly just the natural groove of my molar, though there some decay and a hole. I'm now wondering whether it actually needed extracting at all, but I guess its done now. They did do several tests and an xray beforehand, and I suppose they wouldn't have just taken it if they saw no reason to? That said I'd probably advise all of you to hold off where possible, unless you're in serious amounts of pain.

Aside from that, the staff were all lovely, and the extraction was quick and went smoothly, which was a relief.

Kel9 · 22/04/2020 09:55

So the filler I’ve bought works but only for a few days! So I need to keep filling but hey it stops the constant pain!! How you all getting on?

Kel9 · 22/04/2020 18:43

Just to update on this thread which I joined when I was having a dreadful time with toothache during lockdown, when no dentists were open.
My own dentist was very supportive on the phone with antibiotics and painkillers despite being unable to do anything, but I was eventually referred to the dental hub for a possible extraction. I agreed as I had had six weeks of pure agony; in tears most days and unable to sleep, even on massive doses of painkillers. Well the hub never called me back, and as luck would have it, my toothache subsided a bit and was bearable for the rest of lockdown.
My dentist called me in as soon as they were open again, and it turned out that I had irreversible pulpitis, and am now having root canal treatment. I gather that pulpitis is one of the most painful things you can get.
Well it’s a good job my holiday got cancelled, as it’s costing ££££££ Grin
Is Kel9, who’s thread this was, still here?
