M&S leggings causing heart attack symptoms

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 11:32

Ok so hear me out.
Yesterday I wore a pair of M&S compression leggings (sort of gym leggings but called compression leggings and felt a bit like compression sock material) for the first time. Whole day I was fine. When I went to pain I started to get a pain in my left arm like when you've had an injection, like exactly how it feels when you've had an injection, plus a numb and cold feeling through the whole arm and a sort of pulsating twitch in the spot where the pain was (the spot where you'd have an injection in your arm, that's the only way I can describe where it is).

Then I started to feel strange so got up to go to splash water on my face, I looked in the mirror and was white as a sheet and collapsed in the bathroom. I went and got help (and collapsed again on the way). Then we took my blood pressure and it was very low, I usually have low blood pressure which makes me faint after every blood test but I've never collapsed randomly before.

All the symptoms I was googling said heart attack which massively freaked me out (should add I'm 21) especially at the thought of being taken to hospital on my own in these times. I sat up for about an hour with a family member until I felt I wasn't feeling any worse (still had slight arm pain and numbness) and went to bed. All I can think was it could be something to do with wearing the compression leggings all day causing some sort of circulation problem. Am I being batshit please be honest. Please excuse my dire story telling skillsConfused

Don't wear the leggings again

Ginginwine · 11/04/2020 12:51

You’re not being batshit. I’d say it’s highly likely they were the cause.

I only wear compression garments for a couple of hours at a time during exercise. I’d not imagine a whole day is a good idea!

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:02

@VelvetKitty Do you think they could be the cause? I am concerned because they didn't have any health warning and weren't sold as medical, also they cost £35 and I can't return them nowConfused

@Ginginwine https://www.marksandspencer.com/go-seamless-zonal-compression-leggings/p/clp60373247?color=GREYMARL This is the link, they don't have any health warning on so I've messaged M&S. Also they cost £35Confused Dilemma

With those symptoms I would have rung 111.

Beeep · 11/04/2020 13:06

Why were you wearing them all day? They say they are for use during a work out.

MangoBiscuit · 11/04/2020 13:07

Have no medical background, but I would say if you already have low blood pressure, compression clothing probably isn't a good idea. If part of you in under compression, then it would raise your blood pressure (same volume of blood, less space for it) Then when you take them off, it could drop rapidly, causing shock.

I have compression leggings, but no blood pressure issues, and as of yet haven't experienced any unwanted symptoms.

Ginginwine · 11/04/2020 13:09

It depends on the grade of compression and how tight they were I suppose.
It seems logical that if you had symptoms after taking them off that it was linked to your circulation.

Of course you wouldn’t know for certain though. So my hunch is just that. Sorry

Astoatora54 · 11/04/2020 13:09

Do you have any vein problems? I have varicose veins and low blood pressure and have had a similar experience. I definitely would stay away from them!

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 11/04/2020 13:09

Good lord OP: call 999.

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:10

@Beeep Really? I have posted the link on another reply and it didn't have any sort of health warning, I was just wearing them like normal leggings wouldn't have thought M&S would sell medical standard compression wear if that makes sense

OP posts:
Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:13

@Astoatora54 No but my grandmother does and she also has low blood pressure which I think I've inherited from herConfused God I didn't realise a pair of leggings could actually do damage I just thought they were ordinary leggings, God I really am dim, they were on M&S site among normal sportswear and loungewear stuff

It does say clearly they are for use during your workout only...

So clearly not to be worn all day as normal leggings are.

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:19

@Ginfordinner I did the online test and it said ring 999 but all it asked me was did I have pain in my whole arm (yes) and was my arm cold (yes), this was last night and I feel fine this morning. I didn't have a tight chest or breathing problems which made me think I was fine, God it sounds stupid now I say it but extra worried about wasting NHS workers time at the moment

OP posts:
Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:20

@MrsElijahMikaelson1 Do you reckon? I would've thought gym wear would be safe to wear all day maybe I'm just being dim, but it doesn't strictly say only wear when working out, I thought people wear gym leggings all the time now anyway, oops

OP posts:
Oakmaiden · 11/04/2020 13:25

extra worried about wasting NHS workers time at the moment

Nobody should be worried about wasting NHS time if they are concerned they may be really ill. I'm glad this turned out to be a false alarm for you, but I shudder to think that it might have been the start of something dramatic and you ignored it because you didn't want to waste time.

At the very least you should have phoned the help line and let them triage you.

HappyHammy · 11/04/2020 13:26

Removing tight clothing can cause blood pressure to drop. Didnt women who used to wear girdles or corsets all day suffer with this?

Monsterjam · 11/04/2020 13:27

It clearly says that the leggings target areas during a workout , they are sold as work out kit, you wore them all day so no I don’t think you should take this up with M&S , just wear as advised in future

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 11/04/2020 13:30

OP people are dying because they’re not accessing emergency healthcare when they need to. It’s been on the news. <a class="break-all" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52232941?intlink_from_url=www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/c207p54m08dt/ae&link_location=live-reporting-story" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">BBC News

If you’re having heart attack symptoms then please ring 999. Not doing so could result in serious long-term complications or even death. You absolutely need to be seen.

moveandmove · 11/04/2020 13:31

Why would you wear them all day? Compression clothes are tight so not the most comfortable of things to wear Confused

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:34

@SeasonallySnowyPeasant You're right. Because I'm 21 I thought I would probably be fine but it's a good job I was okConfused and the thought of being taken off to hospital on my own when it might of been nothingSad but yes you are right and if a family member had those symptoms I would've said to them what you said to me for sure

OP posts:
morecoffeerequired · 11/04/2020 13:35

If you have low blood pressure anyway, I would have thought that wearing anything that interferes with your circulation is not a good idea.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 11/04/2020 13:39

It feels different when it’s you :) You are just as important as anyone else. If you’re potentially having a medical emergency then you should absolutely access emergency medical attention to which you are entitled.

Mumaof0 · 11/04/2020 13:44

@HappyHammy The weird thing is they were pretty comfy and didn't feel that tight, but then again I'm used to wearing jodhpurs and riding tights so maybe they were tighter than average

OP posts:
SpillTheTeaa · 11/04/2020 13:45

It does state they're only for workout..
'Our special Go Seamless zonal compression leggings from the Goodmove range have been cleverly designed to support targeted areas during your workout and improve performance. '

You also shouldn't be wear compression anything when you have low blood pressure.
Glad you're feeling better.
