Failed Hearing Test

Hi

DS (13 months) failed his hearing test and has been referred to the hospital. They also said he has fluid in one of his ears that could be causing slight hearing problems. They said it wasnt an infection but could be left over from when he was in hospital with an ear infection/chest infection etc earlier this year.

Im not worried - as Im almost sure that his hearing seems ok but a bit of reassurance would be nice!

Am I right not to worry?

Don't worry Becca. My ds had this. He had fluid in both of his ears, it's called Otitis media with effusion and he failed all of his hearing tests too. I'm not convinced though, as it's so difficult to test hearing of little ones. You'd know if he had any hearing issues. But it is good that they are looking into it though.

My ds was also plagued by hearing infections. He had grommits inserted this year and it has totally cleared everything up.

i recall both mine went through a hearing test fail and were referred. my dd ended up on a month of anti biotics but i think ds was ok.

my dd eventually had tonsils and adenoids out... she was always stuffy and got throat and ear infections. what swung it for us, was that when sleeping you could actually hear her sort of stop breathing and gasp a breath again... quite common but none the less dangerous.

the results were less tonsillitis but even now (17) she is prone to ear infections when we go on holidays. i suspect the pressure on the plane and then too much underwater swimming in probably dodgy swimming pools... (anyone see that programme the other night? omg!)

ds still often borderline when he has his ears checked despite not having had an infection for ages. Fluid can just be left over from a cold, taking a while to clear, and muffle hearing but doesn't require any treatment. Worth having it monitored though as if left it could cause him speech problems later on.

You are right not to worry. Both my children have "failed" every hearing test so far apart from the proper ones carried out by audiologists once we trundled up the waiting lists. Ds can hear a crisp packet opened at 100 paces while dd can detect the presence of a silent parent hovering on the landing
They hear what they want to, every time! Dd did have terrible ear infections all last winter and spring and still passed her audiology test btw.

Sorry to put a spanner in the works. DS 3.5 is currently having continued audiology appointments following a failed hearing test, we thought he heard all right and speaks well if not entirely accurately for his age. However he did say 'huh' and 'what' a lot so I asked for a referal (fully expecting to be told he was being a wilfull 3 year old). Anyway he did not do well and we were told he had glue ear (he has never had an ear infection), they expected the problem to be resolved by grommets which he was given urgently because of his hearing levels. Anyway the latest is the grommets are in place and the glue ear is gone but the hearing hasn't improved. He has been referred for an assessment for a hearing aid, speech therapy and an assessment by a specialist sensory teacher. Probably not the reassurance you want, and your ds may be fine but I would definately see it through we have realised that our DS is an expert lip reader and everyone who knows him is really shocked to discover that he has a hearing problem.

I can really recommend cranial osteopathy, there are other threads on it on Mumsnet.
