Do I bother the doctor with this? (Bearing in mind we seem to live there...)

Don't know if I'm missing obv signs of illness, but ds (4 yrs) has had 2 nights of being v hot to touch (no temperature), then day 3 developed weird speckles on arms that turned into red arms like sunburn, that went overnight, then hoarse on days 3/4, now day 5 and last night had bad cough. Meanly sent him to school, though tired, as is still being a boy and annoying siblings. Am I being thick and missing something everyone would know about?

i would just go to the doctor tbh

rather you're proved wrong and he is ok than miss something.

hope he is feeling better soon.

They do a sit and wait at 12.15 so I think I will. Just seem to be there all the time - 2 year old needs repeat blood test as last time it clotted (?) so there tomorrow as well. I just can't think of anything it could be?

Red sunburn type rash could indicate scarlet fever which needs antibiotics, so I would take him.
I know how you feel, I have spates of taking my three to the dr all the time, and it does get a bit

Virus? If well in all other respects you don't need to go to GP imo. Not really fair to send to school if you really think he might have some bizarre and serious unidentifiable illness.

Tiggiwinkle · 13/09/2007 11:06

Did the rash leave a rough, sandpapery feel on the skin? As overrun says, the combination of sore throat and red rash that loks like sunburn suggests scarlet fever. It is essential to get abs for this as there can be serious compications if you dont (involving the kidneys, for instance). If in any doubt do take him to the GP-better to be safe than sorry!

Uhoh. Did think twice about school but as rash nearly vanished and was being little horror thought I should send him. Picking him up at 11.45. Rash started like little bumps, then like sunburn on arms, then faded. Glad I'm not the only squatter at the doctors.

Definitely get him checked. Also. have a look at his tongue-scarlet fever usually gives the tongue a white thick coating which then comes off and leaves a bright red tongue with little white flecks showing through (hard to describe -it is known as "strawberry tongue"-have a look on google images!)

Thanks Tiggiwinkle. Just been googling neck lumps (two year old ds awaiting repeat blood test) and scared myself stupid, so may rely on sensible doctor to check tongue. Otherwise will assume something terrible and extrememly rare. Feel a bit stupid for sending him to school.

don't feel bad aboutschool thing-my point was to illustarte that you have agut feeling which you are ignoring on one hand and abiding on the other.

Deep down you probably know he's fine otherwise youwouldn'thave sent him to school

morethanmum · 13/09/2007 11:30

Thanks. Will take him to be sure. May as well make the most of dh tax bill
