Anybody any experiences of this? DD (12.9) has been suffering intermitantly since the spring, was fine during the six week hols as long as she wasn't to active and cut out all sport. Now she's back at school doing PE it's started up again (not helped by the trampoline we've just bought).

She saw the GP who most helpfully said It's very common, have some anti-inflammatory analgesia, rest it for 10 days and sent us on our merry way! I bought her some tubi-grip which helps. Now,I have made another appointment for a few days time as she at one point this week was crying with the pain. She's very dissapointed as she can't participate as much in her PE lessons.

I was wondering if anybody has experience of this, what treatment helped and what was the outcome. Thankyou.

Thanks slubber, I will indeed ask for a physio referal, she did manage a full PE session today, but I did dose her with her anti-inflamatories before she went to school.

Yes sorry - thinking about this on the school run.......I came straight back to say see a physio before messing about with the strapping I mentioned!!!

It really does help though - it is quite amazing how something so simple can help. That is if it is chondromalacia patellae

hennipenni · 12/09/2007 16:07

I thought about it on the school run to Bobby.

Also worthwhile revisiting GP - ask for a referral to a rheumatologist as well as orthopaedic. Rheumatology diagnosed me better than orthopaedic ever did.

Does she have hyperflexive joints? Has she ever dislocated anything?

clarevoiant · 12/09/2007 17:39

sorry if this has been mentioned... as have just skipped through thread.
I was diagnosed with osgood schlatters at around 11. It was very painful and i had to give up sport at school, wasnt allowed to ride my bike/run or do anything much except swim, consequently i put on weight :-( after 3 years of on/off pain and non stop big pink pills 3 times a day (brufen 400) i got an appointment with the specialist through my dads company private health scheme. They operated a few weeks later, turns out it was something to do with the kneecap not going in quite a straightline or something. Been fine since the op.
All I'd say is if it doesnt clear up after what you think is a reasonable length of time, get a second opinion, dont let your dd go for 3 years because her doctor doesn't think there's anything wrong (or in my case, said he thought I was making it up!)

BobbyGrantycal · 12/09/2007 17:43

clairvoiant - that would be chondromalacia patellae

clarevoiant · 12/09/2007 17:51

THanks bobby, always wondered what it was.

have gone back and read through a bit more of the thread (while ds 2 shouts lelow blu lelow blu at me ). it enlightening to find out 25 years later what was actually wrong.

sorry for being vague and repeating what others have said. that'll teach me for not reading the thread properly before posting.

BobbyGrantycal · 12/09/2007 17:52

lol

booge · 12/09/2007 17:59

Another Chondromalacia Patellae sufferer here, I've just realised I haven't had it since DD.

VeniVidiVernonHartshornNUMNQV · 12/09/2007 18:33

It's frighteningly common isnt it?

How many of you had SPD in pg as well?

Tinker · 12/09/2007 18:39

Oh, isn't it interesting? I was never diagnosed with SPD but used to have a really painful and clicky pelvis in late pregnancy and for about 6 months post birth. Plus, my first daughter had to see a paediatrician when 2 weeks old since her post-birth check identified possible hyper-extensive (right phrase? The midwife said "floppy wrists") joints. Plus, I'm very "double-jointed" (ie my balletic (goat-like!) feet.

VeniVidiVernonHartshornNUMNQV · 12/09/2007 20:40

Are you tall and thin as well Tinker?

BobbyGrantycal · 12/09/2007 21:33

DId not have spd but have been left with a gammy lower back after having ds2. I have hyper mobile joints as do my sisters and boys

VidiVickiVENIQV · 12/09/2007 22:57

Yes, like me and my brothers.

My brother has also been tested for Marfans Syndrome. It fits....

larry5 · 12/09/2007 23:36

My DD (15) has had Osgood-Schlatter's disease since she was 11. We were told it was related to growth hormones as at the time she was entering puberty.

She had a lot of pain and it was suggested to us that it could have been caused by the fact that she had been using a trampoline on a regular basis. When her knees were at their worse we used cold packs, and knee supports. She was told not to do long distance running or contact sports.

At one point her leg was put in plaster but that did no good and, in fact, made things much worse for a while. She still gets some pain from her knees but much less than she used to and now knows when to stop activities and has learnt to live with the problem.

Tinker · 12/09/2007 23:37

Well, not any more but I was as a youngster. Am same height now as I was at 12 or 13 - 3'7"

  • 5'6"
Tinker · 12/09/2007 23:44

Do people here almost have to unfold their legs gingerly when have been sitting cross-leged on the floor? And standing up after squatting can be excruciating. Another thing I get is little muscle spasms after a bout of knee pain. Can go on for a few days in just one leg and then, can switch to the other leg. I found the medical name for it once.

Tinker · 12/09/2007 23:46

Muscle fasciculation

VidiVickiVENIQV · 12/09/2007 23:59

me too

Not skinny though....(any more)

i get pain in teh back of the knee, yes...
i still (at age 31 fgs), get leg-ache. Its sort of like sciatica, but it isnt sciatica. Its to do with the pelvic instability, and nerves surrounding. (sacro-iliac is split into three bits in my back, apparently).

larry - shouldnt have to live with it, should she?
