UPDATE Baby with persistant cough

A few of you may remember me posting a few weeks ago because my DS2 has a persisitant cough.

Well he has still got the cough so it's been 3 months now . He has been booked in for a chest x-ray but not for about 4 more weeks. Nursery rang he this morning to stay he was coughing non-stop for 1/2 hr this morning and vomited up his breakfast and then loads of phlem. I am realy at a loss now, he seems healthy otherwise (apart from the colds most babies get)and am really starting to panic that something is very wrong.

Is there anything else I should be asking my doctor to do? I really don't know what to do with myself, I'm so worried about him.

Hello, am just a mum.
Sorry to hear about your Ds2. Think maybe you should go back and tell the doc about what happened at the nursery, sounds nasty.
My Ds has asthma (technically a viral-induced wheeze) this is often tied in with coughing and chest infections somehow. If he coughed a lot I would use his puffer, and it helps. If he is bad though he starts to have a lot of trouble breathing and sometimes gets to a stage where he can't do anything at all but lie there wheezing (we've been to A&E twice). Our Doc said something about asthma and coughing but I can't really remember what.
They always stress its not actually asthma but is the little vessels in his lungs swelling due to the virus infection that then causes breathing difficulties. Hopefully he might grow out of it. It's quite common I think.

Haribosmum · 12/09/2007 05:17

Yes my DS1 has got Asthma. The doc suggested trying a small amount of his puffer but it didn't seem to help at all.

It might be whooping cough...that can go on for months and you don't always get the 'whoop'.
Definitely go back to the Dr. because there is a test that can be done I think.

Poor little thing x

my son has asthma 2. The last time he was ill i gave him his normal 2 puffs which didnt do a thing so we ended at hosp who told me i can give him up to 10 puffs 4hrly. So they gave him ten puffs to which he was fine. im not suggesting u give him that much espeacially as sounds like your son younger but basically he might need more than what u giving him so might b worth asking how much he can have. Also is he on a brown inhaler? I also would get back to doc about happened at nursery. I know from experience u have to keep nagging sometimes and sometimes seeing another doc can get to the bottom of things. Hope u get things sorted

My son is only 9 months so a bit wary about pumping more drugs into him . I think we will just have to pack up one evening and go to the childrens hospital so get a chest x-ray and some other tests done. I'm now thinking it might be bronchitus because his cousin has got the same (1month older than him). I have scared myself silly with what it might be I just need to know to knock some sense into me!

He's been really wheezy for the past 24 hours but nor distressed (I am though LOL!). I just get so worried. Anyone know how many breaths per minute a 9 month old should be having?

OP posts:
emkana · 15/09/2007 07:11

about 30 to 40 I think

How many is he doing?

Haribosmum · 15/09/2007 07:30

He was doing about 50 before. Easy to count because he's wheezing so can hear clearly when he draws in breath and breathes out.

MY DS had a persistant cough from February to at least April this year (he was 7-9 months) and he used to cough so much he vomited all his stomach contents up about once a day - it started about a week after he started nursery and just went on and on. Never really bothered him but it was awful for us.

I took him to the doctors and they said it was usual for some babies to be sick when coughing and they weren't concerned.

And then it just went one day - he stopped coughing and he stopped being sick. He is now 14 months and has got another cough - again, at the beginning of this one it caused him to vomit everything up - I think some babies just are affected that way.

I would still get your DS checked out but just wanted to post my experience - it would appear some coughs just do last a long time.

Haribosmum · 15/09/2007 07:53

Thanks ceebee. I wouldn't be so worried about the cough but it's the wheezing and 'coughing attacks' that worry me. He's got his hopital appointment for 2nd October so will wait for that unless he has a bad night or a coughing fit.

if he is breathing fast and sucking in his tummy I would get him checked straight away. My dd started having episodes like this after having bronchiltus just before her second birthday. SInce then she has been admitted to hosiptal 5 times for up to 3 days at a time to regulate her asthma. She is often on oxygen and 2 hourly 10 puffs of a reliever when she is in. The reliever can be given as the other mum's said quite frequently. He may have a bacterial infection and need some anti-biotics to clear it up. Don't ever think you are being a pain. Make as much fuss as you need to and if you are ever in doubt just go to a and e. The paramedics that come to get dd when she is bad always say that they are happy to attend a child with asthma or breathing problems.
HTH

chocbiscuits · 15/09/2007 21:18

I totally agree with allieBongo.

We have had to go to A&E twice with asthma and stayed in two nights the second time (though the second night felt like a bit of a fraud coz he seemed completely fine). Ds has often had to have 6-10 puffs two hourly.
If your Ds could have wheezing he needs checking out before 2nd Oct.

Haribosmum · 17/09/2007 01:38

Well we are on 'high alert' ATM! As soon as he gets bad again we're heading straight up to a&e to get him checked out. Told nursery to give me a call if he has another coughing fit or is very wheesy. I don't want to go to a&e until he gets bad again so they can see how bad he gets and hopefully do something about it.

So we took him to the doctors yesterday and they didn't have an appointment, just the nurse to listen to his chest. As soon as she saw him they suddenly managed to find him an appointment. Doc listen to his chest and said he was very wheezy. He could hear him wheezing from the other side of the room! He gave him an inhalor and a spacer so now he's on 4 puffs 4 hourly. He didn't think it would help but said it was worth a go. He also put him on a very strong dose of antibiotics because the fluid that has been in his inner ear for a few weeks is getting 'gluey' and infected He has to go back in 48hrs so they can monitor his breathing and of couse he has his chest x-ray in 2 weeks. I'm just worried now that this may do some irreversable damage to his lungs but glad that it seems someone is trying to help him now. Still worried sick though

Wish me luck for my dr appointment today! I'm not sure what they are going to do but he is still wheezing badly.

Update on the update! Well after a course of steriods and the strong ab's he's a different baby. Full of beans (honestly he we thought he wouldn't stay still before but now he's even worse!) and so much brighter. Never seen him so happy in the nine months he's been born! He must feel soooooo good!
