my dd was sent home from nursery due to 3 runny nappies - she is fine in herself but this came on suddenly after lunch - so possibly something i gave her for lunch. what should i give her for tea that'll be gentle on her tummy? she is a big eater but usually has lots of fruit at tea time after a main something and i dont want to give her fruit.
any suggestions would be most welcome! TIA

the recommendation is to give carbohydrate rich food e.g. pasta, potatoes, bread, etc The only fruit I would offer is a banana as it is starchy and can help make the poos more solid

stewed apple/apple sauce is good for a dodgy tummy, scrambled egg too but depends just how bad she it.

Does she eat rice? The BRAT diet is the best for dicky tums. Bananas Rice Apples and Toast.

thank you all. she hasnt had rice yet, but the other things all sound good. she isnt that bad ( but i've only had one nappy!)but i guess nursery had to take the usual precautions and now she cant go back for 48hrs. i will try her with toast and banana. will she be ok with her bedtime bottle of formula?
thanks again.

Agree on banana and toast, my GP told me to give this DS1 when he had dodgy tummy, and breast milk, but I dont know about formula sorry.

Don't know how reliable that ^ site is but is says formula is ok and don't dilute it.

spoke to out of hours gp service about this last night for 10 month ds. they said don't starve, give extra fluids and meals should have plenty fibre like cereal, pears, apricots, prunes etc

Seona1973 · 11/09/2007 16:14

what age is your lo? When my ds had a tummy bug last week I was told I could just feed him as normal and not to starve him but if I wanted I could stop his milk as that can prolong the dodgy tummy. The official advice is to keep giving normal feeds of both food and milk.

I chose to not give milk for a couple of days and he had his food as normal and plenty of fluids. He is just over 11 months though and only has 2 milk feeds so it was not so much of his daily food amount as a younger babies milk intake would be.

thread here on this query

from nhs direct website:

You should eat as soon as you can. The old advice was to not eat anything for a day or two but now it is advised that you should eat foods high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice, or potatoes, and other foods as soon as you feel like it. If however you feel you cant eat, it will do you no harm, but continue drinking, and eat as soon as you are able. If your child wants to eat, offer soups and foods high in carbohydrates at first. Your child can eat normally as soon as possible. Do not starve your child. If your child refuses to eat, continue to offer drinks and wait until their appetite returns.

If you are breast- feeding or bottle- feeding your child and they have diarrhoea, continue, if they will still feed (use their normal strength feed if they are bottle feed). Rehydration drinks should also be given if necessary.

thank you all. she is 12 months and only on 2 bottles a day, and drinks lots of water. i notice she seems more thirsty now too. will offer her milk at bedtime and see what she takes.
thanks for your help
