help! any hints!? my ds has minor op next week and has to starve from 5am and no water after 8. Op is around lunchtime....normally he'd have breakfast and a snack (biscuit) as well as a glug of milk or juice with breakie. ANy hints anyone? Think he'll be going nuts.....

It will be tough on you, but set your alarm for 4.30 and give him something then.
Have plenty of things to distract him eg. new toy / DVD.
Make sure he can't get at anything to eat or drink himself, as vomiting ones stomach contents during an anaesthetic is not recommended.

thanks. good tips. will ensure have loads of toys for hospital and snacks in separate bag.

not sure about getting up so early though.... then we will be waiting for ages and he will be tired by 11. ohhh it's going to be hard!

I would actually keep him up really late the night before, late as possible, and give him a big before bed supper.

if he waskes before 8 give him a big drink of water. If not, just leave him to sleep as long as poss.

Then try to get him to nap until OP time.

Good luck.

thanks - good idea re big tea, will do that.
He will wake before 8 though i am sure and not sure he will just nap on an empty stomach. We've quite a drive to the hospital so maybe he will drop off on route...

Popmum, ds had op at 13 months and the nbm was the hardest bit! but he is on list at lunchtime so not too bad - just distract him with all the toys in the day-surgery waiting room! oh, and all the best!

My ds is 14 months, he had to have a general anesthetic last Friday, I was really worried how he would cope without milk or food for so long, but he was fine, was distracted by all the comings and goings in the hospital.

Good luck to you!

thank you both for your good wishes.
