Anti depressant making me feel sick

PicadillyCircus · 06/10/2004 11:41

Have finally gone to see the doctor and I do have depression.

I've been presribed Cipralex and am on 10mg a day. I took the first one about an hour ago and feel very nauseous. The instructions say that more than 1 in 10 people suffer from nausea and I am definitely suffering..

Anyone else had this, and how long did it last for?

never took Cipralex, but have taken other ADs. You can get these types of symptoms for up to two weeks (hopefully it'll settle in less than that tho)

I would try and ride through the initial side effects, and just take things as easily as possible. atm

will post more detail in a bit.

I was on AD's ten years ago and suffered nausea for a couple of weeks. Severe tiredness lasted the whole two years i was taking them. Also if you up your dose at all you may get nausea again until your body adapts to the change. Good luck

Thanks MTS - I hope it is less than 2 weeks as this is feeling like the morning sickness I had and hated with DS

Sorry no personal experience but my BIL is on them and has been told it's very important to eat in order for them to work as he doesn't have much of an appetite. Do you have to take yours with meals?

Tessiebear · 06/10/2004 11:44

Also - you probably wont feel any positive effect for a couple of weeks - hang in there, it will be worth it !!!

PicadillyCircus · 06/10/2004 11:48

My leaflet says they can be taken with or without food - not sure when is best to take them really.

One of my problems with depression has been losing my appetite....when any of you who have had nausea with ADs had it, was it an all day thing?

Sorry about confused sounding sentence there.

My mum was prescribed Cipralex recently and had the same reaction - she solved it by taking it at night instead of in the morning (so she'd sleep through the nausea!) and the nausea did disappear after a couple of weeks anyway.

Sorry to hear about your depression, I'm there too at the moment. Lots of support on mn for you PC X

i don't think there is any best time to take them - probably best to experiment and see what suits you best. sounds like a good idea from SM to take them at night. i have not heard of having to take food with them for them to work - but certainly if you eat a lot less than you should be, it will make you feel worse as your blood sugar will be low.

PC - I took them for 18m, and do remember feeling a bit queasy for the first week. I also felt a bit like the world was surreal...if that makes sense. It was gone within a week. Hope you feel better soon!

Susanmt's dh is a GP and gave me some wonderful advice for a friend of mine who was taking ADs and also had a phobia about vomiting. He suggesting taking anti-sickness tablets at the same time. It's perfectly OK to do this. He even suggested a brand but I cant' find the original thread this was on.
