Blood in urine

My 11 yr old ds has had blood in his urine for almost 5 months now. He noticed it himself. He also leaves spots of blood on his underwear. His initial urine test came back as negative for bacteria so the doc stopped his antibiotics. He was eventually referred to a urologist for an x-ray and ultrasound both of which came back clear, he also has some protein in his urine. One urine sample he provided seemed to have what looked like a clot in it.

Now we're waiting for him to be referred to a pediatric nephrologist. I have no idea what the problem could be, so if anyones had these symptoms please let me know if I'm worrying over nothing. Thanks

dont have any experience of this, just didnt want you to go unanswered. I dont thin kyou are worrying over nothing but it is good that the ulstrasound and xrays have come back clear so you can put any obvious nasties out of your mind. Does your son have any pain? It could be a kidney infection i suppose, but i would have thought he would have had pain if so. I think that the protein in the urine is simply because he has blood in it, which is full of proteins.

do you have any family history of renal probs?

triplethefun · 11/09/2007 19:10

Thanks for your replies. No family history at all. Urologist seems to think there may be a problem inside his kidneys but gave no indication what that may be.
He's not in any pain just occasionally feeling nauseous and headachey - but that could be a reaction to school rather than anything medical.
Googling kidney problems just comes back with some scary diagnosis and I suppose I just wanted someone to say they'd had similar and it turned out to be nothing at all.

Does he do a lot of cycling?
Sometimes boys can injur themselves if they slip onto the crossbar too hard or have a hard saddle, thus irritating the bladder and urethra which can then bleed.

Vole, he doesn't really do a lot of cycling and hasn't injured himself as far as I'm aware. When we saw the urologist he seemed to think that a rash he had in April may be significant but wouldn't really elaborate on that as it isn't his speciality.

Not long before he started to notice the blood he had had a rash that we initially thought were midge bites as he'd just been camping but they spread a little more and lingered for too long to be that and his skin became quite sensitive to touch for a few days. However, he wasn't unwell really in himself and we didn't take him to the docs.

A couple of weeks prior to that he'd had some sort of allergic reaction after a scout meeting where they'd tasted different foods - he had some lychee jelly - he broke out in hives that evening and his fingers swelled and I think his legs a little. But we gave him piriton and by the next morning the swelling was almost gone. Again we didn't take him to the doctors. I keep worrying that either of these events may have affected his kidneys in some way and what if they're getting progressively more damaged by the day.

This may be well off the mark, but my dd suffers from blood and protein in her urine and has done for the last 6 months since she suffered from HSP. It stands for Henoch Schonlein Purpura and is characterised by a rash of large purple/red marks and swelling of the limbs. My dd had a really severe case she couldn't walk for weeks and was in hospital on morphine for the pain, but they did say some cases are very mild and fairly pain free. It is an auto-immune disease that comes out of nowhere and attacks your small blood vessels so they become damaged and leak, hence the rash, the swelling and the blood in the urine. Like I say it may not be, but symptoms sound similar, she is now pain free but will continue to have urine samples checked at the hospital indefinately.

Hi debbie, it sounds like you've been thru the mill with your dd - I've never heard of HSP. I'm glad she's feeling better now. My ds has his appointment now for next week, just hoping he's ok.

Its good you've got an appointment date - our consultant keeps telling us that dd's blood in the urine is not a problem unless she stops growing or can't eat without feeling sick. She is 5 in age 7 clothes so they are not worried - but I can't help but worry that its not good to loose blood like this, but at least I guess I know what caused it. Hope all goes well for you and your ds.
