Anyone had dry socket?

Chickencuddle · 25/03/2020 15:34

Omg the pain.
Had a wisdom tooth removed a week ago. Pain became really bad. Went back. He said it was dry socket and infected. cleaned it and packed it and gave me antibiotics.
Had to go back next day as was in agony. He cleaned it again and cut it to try and form a new blood clot then packed it again. It was done yesterday and now it's really hurting again. Is his normal? Did the padding just run out? Or maybe the infection is causing the pain.
Do I just have to wait it out? He said unfortunately not much more they can do and have to kind of deal with pain while it heals. But how much pain is too much pain. It's not awful atm. But still throbbing and pain in my lymph nodes and ear.
How long does it take to heal. How do you help it heal and when do you need to go back?
Sorry for moany post.
Thanks

Yes, I had it. My sympathies. It is the worst. After I had it packed it was manageable. I think you maybe need to press for it to be packed again if you can't sleep etc.

Heat packs on my face and cocodamol helped. I think it took a couple of days to fade significantly.

endofthelinefinally · 26/03/2020 08:06

Yes. It is grim.
Are you on ABx now?

Lou670 · 26/03/2020 08:10

Oh you poor thing. Yes I had a dry socket. The pain was off the scale!

Mine was packed too with that brown stringy stuff that was soaked in clove. I had to go back every two days to have repacked. It will heal eventually and the packing starts to fall out as it heals. You end up with all the stringy bits all over the inside of your mouth.

It took a long time for both ends of the gum to meet and heal over, although at that stage there was no pain.

It is horrible. I hope it settles down for you soon x

Chickencuddle · 26/03/2020 08:11

Yes on my 4th day of antibiotics now. It's better than it was but still very painful. The packing is still in. Just wondering how long I have to deal with the pain for. Once yours was cut and packed did it heal on it's own?

OP posts:
Chickencuddle · 26/03/2020 08:12

I've not been told to go back to get it repacked. Hope I dont need yo phone again I feel like such a nuisance especially with everything going on.

Has it got worse again after being packed? Just wondering if the packing is in place.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/03/2020 08:22

I had to go a 4 day BH weekend with dry socket, then a week with antibiotics that didn't work then a week with ones that finally did. I wanted to pull my own face off. I ended up dosing myself on super strong knockout painkillers my brother gave me from his back operation...

How I laugh when I look back to the dentist offering me a prescription for antibiotics on the day, just in case, and me glibly saying no, it'd be fine!... Shock

Troels · 26/03/2020 08:26

I had dry socket last month, tooth out and within a few days I knew it wasn't right, so painful.
It was cleaned and packed with the cloves stuff, (I hate that smell.) It worked. I still have a divit in the gum, a month later but I think it'll improve.

allypally999 · 26/03/2020 08:43

Yep really painful. I had to get it packed at least twice. I'd call getting that done essential as the pain drives you mad.

Chickencuddle · 26/03/2020 09:10

Thanks everyone glad it's not me. It's better than before it got packed but after it was packed it felt great and now its painful again but think it's just the numbing stuff wearing off.

Ugh god yes it’s agony.

Are you doing salt water bathing? I was instructed to do so (I guess not when there are dressings on it though? I think I had a certain amount of time to wait before doing it) - NOT rinsing/gargling as that will dislodge the clot. You just have to hold your head to keep the wound submerged.

Once it’s starting to heal, proper corsodyl mouthwash is great (or a cheaper one in Wilko is good, active ingredient is clorhexidine) but only once it’s safe to actually rinse

LefttoherownDevizes · 26/03/2020 09:18

OP You have my utmost sympathies, my dry socket was the worst pain I've ever had.

I found getting mine packed made the pain just very sure rather than hoping for death asI was before it was packed.

Out of interest what antibx have they given you?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/03/2020 09:19

I did. Pain was awful. I also was given amoxicillin.

I then started feeling really quite ill, my legs and hands swelled up. Got a big red rash etc.

Thought it was just the infection. Turns out I'm allergic to penicillin. Was a rubbish time!

slipperywhensparticus · 26/03/2020 09:22

Check your mouth for thrush that clove stuff gave me thrush

Chickencuddle · 26/03/2020 19:52

If it's still hurting after antibiotics finish (7 day course) should I go back. Pain is in ear and lymph nodes too.

Ring up first OP, dental surgeries are closed in the main....you'll probably feel better by the end of the course, good luck x

loutypips · 26/03/2020 19:59

Oh the pain! Sadit was horrible. I would say it took a fortnight for the pain to go, and I had two different types of antibiotics. Paracetamol and codeine helped a little...
I had a tooth removed 1st November and although it's healed now, I do get the odd twinge. I think the other teeth shifting and the gum growing feels odd though.

DameHannahRelf · 26/03/2020 20:03

The only thing that helped when I had it, was clove oil, I'd dip a cotton bud in it, then round the dry socket. Watch you don't get any on your lip though, or it'll go numb.

ClientQueen · 26/03/2020 20:06

I had it and they packed it and it healed fine after that. I'm a weirdo though and had no pain, just a weird taste in my mouth which is what made me go back

nildesparandum · 26/03/2020 20:12

I had this dry socket dry socket forty years ago.(I am old)
The worst pain I've ever been through since childbirth.
I remember having to go to the dentist every day to have the cloves packing.Yes it is sheer hell.

MumsBiscuits · 26/03/2020 21:16

you poor soul, as others have said it's utterly awful. I was prescribed panadol (I think) which i got in limited doses so didn't get addicted - it helped a bit alongsdie the clove oil... I also had root left behind which later had to be surgically removed. Nasty. I hope it heals soon.

Chickencuddle · 29/03/2020 12:22

Thanks everyone fingers crossed...I dont want to jinx it but I think it's on the mend. Still slight pain during the day and gets a little worse at night but so so much better. Hope I dont need anymore out. Thanks for reassuring me.
