My friend's baby has been born with 74% pigmentation...

A dear friend has just given birth to her first child and she not only had a terrible delivery (she was induced twice and they ended up doing a c secton) but the little baby is quite poorly. He has 74% pigmentation and the organs on one side of his body are all smaller than the organs on the other side. He's now out of special care but wont be well enough to come home for some time.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of either of these conditions please?

that sounds really sad - what is this condition mckenzie - will it affect him as he grows up.? I do hope he's ok. Your friend must be feeling pretty unhappy at the moment - she's going to need a lot of support. Makes you realise how lucky you are.

I don't know anything about it yet Joolstoo, that was my main reason for posting really, to see if anyone on mumsnet knew anything.

Is it vitiligo?

mckenzie · 06/10/2004 08:44

I Dont think so secondhand rose as that is described as white patches appearing whereas these pigments are reddy inc olour, rather like birthmarks.
I'm going to see her today os hopefully i'll find out more (if she knows anymore yet, they wnt to do lots of tests to see what ahs caused it so I'm guesing that as yet even the hospital dont know what it is).

I used to go to school with a girl who had reddy patches all over her but one side of her body was noticably larger than the other - obviously not sure about her organs. Also I think one leg was longer as she used to wear shoes one of which had a built up sole/heel.

they have already said Jampot that although the size difference at the moment is purely internal it could become external as he grows.

There isn't too much pigmentation on his face apart from his forehead and they have said that they'll do a skin graft on that area.

She's resigned herself to a life of hospital visits already.

i am very interested to follow this thread. i dont think dd has the same condition as your friend's, mckenzie, but she was born with a large black mole on her forehead. it's about the size, length and width of my thumb. although dd is otherwise perfectly healthy, it is slightly upsetting, esp when strangers always comment abt it and ask stupid questions like, "oh is that a mole". dh always says he feels like retorting back, "no i did it with a marker pen!"

paediatrician and my dermatologist says theres no way to remove it. i wonder if thats really the case.
