DH hit in eye by stick - recommend something I can get from pharmacy please?

DH was gardening today and a small branch pinged him in the eye, it looked bloodshot straight away with an obvious impact point but didn't bother him and he refused to do anything, it seemed much better at tea time, then after a shower looks much worse and is watering and a little more shut than usual iyswim.

I'm assuming he may need some kind of antibiotic eye drops but with things the way they are currently he's (understandably) reluctant to go to minor injuries. Is there something I can pick up at the pharmacy tomorrow that would help oh wise ones? Or should he get it looked at properly? Tia!

Send him to pharmacist...it s one in one out he can wait in line and ask pharmacist to see him and advise

I would usually say it needs looking at properly in case of damage but the over the counter eye antibiotic drop is called chloramphenicol if he isn't in pain

Smallinthesmoke · 21/03/2020 23:55

I would try and get your hands on some saline or all-in-one contact lens fluid, and flush it out as much as you can. You can make an eye bath out of an egg cup.
Ideally tonight not tomorrow morning.

Having had a corneal abrasion twice in my life I can say it really fucking hurts with even minor damage. Proper, can't open your eye type hurting, with every time you blink or your eyes water slightly you scream in pain type pain (and I've given birth twice with no pain relief).

Even on those occasions the treatment was just rest, over the counter lubricating eye drops and pain relief.

If he can keep his eye open and it's just a bit red and watery then a good nights sleep and not rubbing it/putting contact lenses in etc will probably fix it.

How is it this morning?

Go to a local opticians to check. It may be a corneal abrasion. You'll only then need to go to eye casualty if it's deep or large.

endofthelinefinally · 22/03/2020 07:57

This happened to DH.
I sent him straight to the local opticians. They have all the right equipment to examine eyes for damage.
They checked and he had a corneal abrasion.
They gave him antibiotic eye drops and a dressing/patch.
£10. He was back in half an hour.

SpeedofaSloth · 22/03/2020 07:59

TBH an eye injury is something I'd want to get seen, even now. Opticians would be a good place, even if they have to send him on elsewhere after.

Tulipstulips · 22/03/2020 08:01

You can get chloramphenicol antibiotic eye drops over the counter at pharmacies. But he might be fine in the morning.

WeAllHaveWings · 22/03/2020 08:02

Start at the optician for a minor eye injury. They can prescribe antibiotic drops if needed.

woodencoffeetable · 22/03/2020 08:04

yes, send him to an optician.
they will then recommend something that he can pick up at a pharmacy

DeathMetalMum · 22/03/2020 08:05

Opticians. The eye will need looking at pharmacies dont have the equipment to do so. A specsavers or other high street opticians would be best.

iknowimcoming · 22/03/2020 09:26

Thanks all I'll see if I can get him an appt tomorrow, it's still sore and angry looking and watery this morning, however the impact was on the white bit of his eye rather than the actual cornea, not sure whether he should go to pharmacist today to get some drops as no opticians open on Sunday here?

when I had a scratch after getting sand in my eye I just walked into the nearest optician that was open.
