What’s causing me to have low blood sugar ?

I keep getting low blood sugars , shaking , sweaty, feel like knees going to collapse. Sometimes on exertion sometimes not. When I’ve exercised I’ve vomited and nearly passed out. I eat a healthy diet 3 good meals a day so it’s not diet related. I am Hypothyroid but could it be this ?

@Rewy When do you get these episodes? If you're finding that you're having them a couple of hours or so after eating, that could be a sign that it's the carbs that are doing this to you - your body is releasing so much insulin to deal with the carbs/glucose that it results in low blood sugar - which is what makes you feel so ill

Hi thanks for replying !
I am a healthy weight , not drinking more than usual , I drink lots of water anyway.
I have had the shaking and feeling / being sick episodes in the morning and a few hours after eating. When I get a sudden unexpected vomit it will be when I begin eating my dinner. Usually 6 hours after eating.

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice on this thread. I searched as have been having what I think is low blood sugar issues. I'll buy a monitor & see.
I'm a bit anxious about anything diabetes/pancreas related as there's a history of pancreatic cancer in my family.

Shinyfloors · 29/03/2020 11:36

I used to be very similar, also have hypothyroidism.
Especially low blood sugar whilst working on a hot day, nearly passing out over my mop and bucket sometimes! Certainly shaking, dizzy and slightly confused.
I think it was down to not enough protein and low in iron.
Hope you find the answer to it and your health improves.

I have the testing machine. Is there a testing regime I should follow to measure it? IE should I be testing at certain times?

Silvercatowner · 01/04/2020 08:36

Unless you are diabetic (or have other diagnosed conditions that can cause an unstable blood sugar level) then you don't need to test. As others have said, those with diabetes test their blood to check for high sugar level, which is often symptomless unless it is extremely high.

Just to update.
I ate breakfast yesterday which was shreddies with blueberries. Then later did a workout and all my housework. 3 hrs 30 ltr after breakfast Started to feel unwell and shaky so thought I would try the testing and my blood was 9.8.
Most confusing Confused

Always like an update though sorry you felt unwell.
Could you eat a protein rich breakfast, veggie sausage or nuts and fruit. I wonder if tbe white carbs are to blame.

Silvercatowner · 04/04/2020 19:56

OP do you have a blood pressure machine? It might be worth monitoring your BP rather than blood sugar.

BIWI · 04/04/2020 20:31

Sorry - I don't understand the numbers. But I'd say that if you're eating such a carb-heavy breakfast that's not going to be helping you. As @Shinyfloors suggests, can you swap your carbs for protein - so eggs/bacon, or full fat yoghurt?

hoxt · 04/04/2020 20:39

9.8 is pretty high after all that exercise and 3.5 hours after eating. I would try and get a GP appointment. Carry on testing your blood in the meantime to see if there are any patterns. Test first thing in the morning before you’ve eaten anything, and 2 hours after every meal. Morning fasting should be 5.4 or under, and post meals 7.8.
Hope this helps 🙂

Thanks for the replies.
No I don’t have a blood pressure machine but I could get one !
I will try eating more protein for breakfast.
I’ve had the same feeling though when I’ve woken not eaten and exercised first thing. Nearly passed out and vomited.
Also I occasionally vomit when beginning to eat my evening meal. Then I’m fine and finish my meal.
Thanks for the blood sugar info. I will try fasting testing etc.
I don’t want to trouble the GP at this point with everything that’s happening with Covid 19.
Is it possible that my thyroid is affecting my blood sugars?

Thankyou for all the info Smile

The vomiting is really concerning, and so I'd definitely go to the GP. Please don't worry about the CV-19 thing - you need to be seen.

hoxt · 04/04/2020 21:04

I agree with BIWI.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/04/2020 21:05

Get tested for diabetes.

delilahbucket · 04/04/2020 21:41

I have to have a very high protein diet and lower on the carb front to avoid a blood sugar drop. I also find I'm worse when I've had alcohol the day before.

Rewy · 04/04/2020 21:46

It’s not all the time though.
I would rather test some more so I have evidence for the GP because I’ve discussed it along with other symptoms a few times. Think the thyroid symptoms have perhaps overshadowed things.
I will speak to the GP but would rather wait .
I’ve had the weird vomiting on/ off for over a year. Hence the endoscopy etc.

OP posts:
BIWI · 05/04/2020 07:14

But what more evidence do you need?! Honestly, with those symptoms, especially the vomiting, you need to go back to the GP now. Not wait.
