Pull your lower eyelid down, should be a healthy dark pink
A more orangey shade will suggest anaemia

tamum · 04/10/2004 21:30

Breathlessness walking up stairs can be a symptom too, but Lisa's suggestion is spot on.

Oh, and easily out of breath - lack of iron means you can't make your oxyhaemoglobin so you don't transport oxygen round the body too easily

Its not always from iron deficiency you know, you need certain vitamins to process iron (B12, c and D I think) so you could have lots of iron but not enuf of the vitamins and minerals to process them

Apricots and dark green leafy vegetables are springing to mind for some reason!!!

tamum · 04/10/2004 21:32

Yorkiegirl, it sounds like anaemia to me. Definitely go to the doctor, and hope you feel better soon.

Lisa78 · 04/10/2004 21:33

found a website here - unfortunately its
NHS Direct but nevermind

Lisa78 · 04/10/2004 21:34

you won't feel properly better for a while, I think it can take up to 3 months to regain your proper iron levels

Tablets are v slow but if thats what she prescribes, take them with a big glass of fresh orange juice. That will help prevent the constipation and also will help you process the iron quickly and efficiently
You'll be less likely to get constipated on them if you have them with a meal and then have a big drink of water too

tamum · 04/10/2004 21:36

I got that when I had iron as ferrous sulphate, but not ferrous gluconate, so it might be worth asking if you could try whatever you didn't have last time.

Lisa, it can be much faster than that to feel better though. When I had haemolytic anaemia I felt better within days.

Lisa78 · 04/10/2004 21:37

Didn't mean to post at that point!! I think you can have iron injections, but not sure on this - not sure if it would prevent the constipation anyway!
Let me know how you get on

Lisa78 · 04/10/2004 21:41

thats when your haemoglobin leaks out isn't it tamum? Isn't that genetic or am I getting muddled with something else? I don't think thats the same as anaemia from not having enuf iron / vitamins in your diet though.

Your red blood cells take about 3 - 4 months to completely renew so it can take that long for the iron to be absorbed into all the new blood cells and for you to feel properly better. But sorry yorkiegirl, didn't mean to suggest you would feel crap until then! You should feel an improvement as fast as tamum, I just meant you prob won't feel 100% straight away.

That's right Lisa78, it can be genetic, but I had it as a secondary thing after glandular fever. I guess my spleen was affected. I know it takes a while for complete replenishment of rbcs, but I would have thought most people would feel a lot better before that- I suppose it depends on how severe it is to start with, really. There must be a threshold beyond which you feel crap!

that's not really that anaemic though .. good news

personally I'd avoid the iron tablets and go get some flouridix .. especially if you 've been constipated on iron tablets before
