Sensodyne causing irritation

DH was told to use Sensodyne by his dentist. He did so but after a few days his gums and the inside of his lips became very sore and irritated. Looked (and he says felt) like a lot of mini mouth ulcers.

So he stopped using it and within a few days all was back to normal.

He gave it a while and tried again to double check that it was the toothpaste causing this problem - just rubbing a little of the toothpaste on to his gums . It happened again.

He still has senstiive teeth though. So my task is to try and find out what the irritant it.

Does anyone have any experience of similar and can point him to something which will be kinder on his mouth but still calm down the sensitivity?

I have purchased Morrisons own brand, Colgate Sensitive and Sensodyne Daily Whitening. All have differing ingredients. Confused

I like oral b sensitive

I had similar reaction to Oral B Sensitive Whitening and Sensodyne Sensitive Whitening .
sloughed all the mucosa off the inside of my mouth.
I swapped to Colgate Sensitive without whitening and have not had any problems since.
I now avoid toothpaste with whitening as I think this is probably the cause of irritation.

Thank you for he replies.

Its kind of worrying that some ingredients can be so harsh. DH says he's never had a reaction to toothpaste in his life - he's in his fifties now. No other allergies either.

Might get him to try the Morrisons first as it has fewer ingredients. (I've made a tsble and listed the ingredients in each so I can try to eliminate something).

It may be the sodium lauryl sulphate that's caused this reaction.
Pro-enamel doesn't contain SLS maybe give that a try.

I found that the rapid relief ones caused irritation to my guns. The pro-namel one is fine, as is one of the other bog standard varieties.

Normally ulceration like that is an allergic reaction, or more of a sensitivity reaction.

Often it's sodium Laural sulfate or cinnamon favouring. But in your DPs case could be the agent used to prevent sensitivity.

Different brands of sensitive toothpastes use different agents, try Colgate sensitive instead. You could even try a different type of sensodyne so if you are using rapid relief th repair and protect.

It's not because of 'harsh' ingredients. I would just try a different brand of sensitive toothpaste like colgate

Thanks all.

Some good advice there. I'll pass it to him to work it out.

I also had sensitive teeth so started using it at the same time and I have no problems.

I had a similar reaction to the rapid relief Sensodyne, so make sure that's not it.
