Nose bleeds , are they normal?

My 9 year old has recently started to have nose bleeds . These occur mostly during the night and although not horrendous are still quite bad. Anyone else experienced this ? should I just leave it? He doesn't seem too worried by them. Any suggestions welcome

my sister used to get them a lot when she was younger. Something about the humidity at night and the air being too dry.
don't think that really helps you though! sorry

I get them and my 2 girls get them too. I think some people are just more susceptible to them.

DS2 used to get them a lot. I took him to a cranial osteopath which calmed things down a great deal. He still gets them now and again, but nothing like before.

Probably of no help at all this, but DP gets them at night and almost inevitably after drinking fruit juice during the day.

Thanks everyone.
You know what it's like, you just need to know that others have the same experience. Sounds crazy but it's very reassuring.

DS had this - ended up having to have his nose cauterised (v quick op under general) - hasn't had one since.

My 3 yo son has them very regularly.

How did you know it was a problem willow? I would really like it to stop -- don't think it's so harmful, but bloody noses are v distressing and I'm wondering what to say to nursery when he starts.

I think it would take something like cauterization to stop my son's. He slammed his face down into a tile floor 2 years ago and it really has been bad since.

Have you turned your heat on recently? I think dry air has a lot to do with nose bleeds. It might be worth putting a humidifier in your ds's bedroom. Also, know this sounds crazy, but try to get him to sleep with his head under the covers. His breathing in a confined space will create humidity and moisten things in his nose.

ds used to get them when he was little (pre-school) and they bled like mad but now only gets them when it has been digitally disturbed!!

JJ - just mentioned them to my gp as they were becoming increasingly frequent. Seemed to happen for no reason at all - and he had loads at night which completely freaked me out. He'd wake up crying and I'd go in and find him covered in blood. Was referred to ear nose and throat chap who suggested we gave it six months to see if they stopped. They didn't so he had his nose cauterised when he was about three if I remember rightly.

JJ · 05/10/2004 21:27

Thanks for the info. It sounds a lot like my son -- loads at night, wakes up covered in blood, but he doesn't wake up. Sometimes it happens during the day for no reason and the amount of blood is just massive!

JJ · 05/10/2004 21:29

oh shoot - "it" should have been "he" but I was thinking that the situation (it) sounded a lot like my son's.

my son has had nosebleeds since the age of 2, the g.p said at the time to see if he grew out of it. By the age of 8 he was getting them loads and was referred to the hospital. They said that he needed it cauterized and it was under a general. Me being the worrier that i am wasn't too keen on the general and the doc gave him some ointment to shove up his nose twice a day as he said that can sometimes do the trick but the doc did say that any child having recurrent frequent nosebleeds is classed as urgent ( no idea why). My son is due to go back soon. I wouldn't worry though, ds has had them all this time and sometimes pretty bad in the night and he is very very healthy in all other respects. I remember having them as a child aswell.

My dh has had noosebleeds constantly since he was a child. He's sixteen now. I have taken him to see the doctor on a number of occassions and there is nothing wrong. It's just one of those things. It tends to happen more when the central heating is on during the night. He is in perfect health otherwise. (washing his pillowcases is a pain though)

bonniej · 08/10/2004 21:11

I meant ds

bonniej · 08/10/2004 21:11

I definately haven't got a sixteen year old dh!
