My baby won't stop farting! Is this normal?

Hi it's me again, ds is 4 weeks old and he's mainly breastfed but with 1-2 formula feeds a day as he's a bottomless pit.

The past couple of days he has started doing really smelly lingering farts. He normally trumps quite a bit but they don't smell. He has got into the habit of pooing once every 2-3 days at night, does this mean he's constipated and if so is that why he's gone a bit stinky? If you think he IS constipated, what do I do?

Mine farted a lot too, takes after her Dad.

Poos tend to get smellier with formula, or at least that's what I found when I started topping up. Does he suffer from colic/trapped wind? It might be the formula, although my DD farted more in the first weeks when she was excl bfed. They werent particulalry smelly, though.

No colic but he's very windy both ends usually. I have been giving him more formula lately, maybe that's it. I'm just worried in case he's in pain with his tummy and can't tell me.

I think you'd notice if he was in pain. My DD had colic just the once (fortunately) but it was apparent from the tone of her crying that she was in pain. I think as long as the wind is coming out of whatever end and not being trapped you're probably OK.

God this reminds me, DD used to do the most godawful farts at night. She'd wake up, whine for a few seconds and then fart hugely, at which point she would go straight back to sleep and DH and I would be stifling giggles in our pillows and trying not to choke on the stench.

She was BF so it probably isnt the formula, I just found that I wasn't winding her enough after her night feeds (it was more a case of quick, she's asleep, put her down!!!)

I used infacol for her big night feeds and this seemed to help it come out the less offensive end.

Chirpygirl that's exactly what we do "he's asleep, chuck him back in his moses basket quick quick!"

I've been forgetting to give him hs infacol too actually, you've just reminded me.

So the frequency of his poos is ok then?

I'd check with someone else regarding poos, DD used to poo every 3 or 4 days but she was EBF so I don't know if that makes a difference!

Word of warning with night infacol, I was once so sleepy and not paying attention that I veeeeeery carefully syringed it right into DD's eye

lol aaw poor baby! that's ok I'm still feeling like a terrible mother for realising the edge of the laptop was resting against babys head as he slept while I typed, and he had a big dent on his forehead which turned into a lovely red mark, 20 minutes before hv came round God knows what she thought!
