Ridiculous GORD, what worked for you?

MoonshineWashingLine · 03/03/2020 10:54

I'm on day 4 of lanzoprasole after stupidly ignoring mild reflux and thinking it would just go away. It didn't, it got worse and now I'm suffering. I'm still having to take gavisgon sometimes on top of the lanzoprasole (not at the same time though).
my question anyway is this, what worked for you to get rid of gord or at least keep it at bay? I seriously need to get this in check, everything feels like it's burning from the top of my throat to the top of my stomach and it's horrible. Thanks in advance.

I had awful awful heartburn during my pregnancies, so not exactly the same, I know, but cutting out wheat, dairy, acidic foods and spicy foods helped a lot for me personally.

It turns out that I have a gluten issues and am allergic to dairy so my body knew.

MoonshineWashingLine · 03/03/2020 12:07

Thanks, I'm already dairy and egg free, cutting gluten as well could be awkward but I will try. I had it really bad during pregnancy too but I don't think anything went back to normal after the second one 😳

I think as we get older our bodies will become less tolerant of food that doesn’t agree so perhaps that’s what’s happened with you, as it has with me.

Going gluten free isn’t easy but the benefits definitely outway the effort.

Good luck and I hope things improve for you.

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 13:19

I had this. I stopped taking any medications and just ate a grape every 15 mins (to give the acid something to work on) when the pain was bad. I also list weight (although I wasn’t technically overweight) and avoided triggers for a bit (cream, chilli and peppermint for me). It’s been OK for around 3 months now but the first few weeks of this were hard.

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 13:20

Lost not list

This was one of my first symptoms of underactive thyroid. Not sure if you have other symptoms like feeling the cold, tiredness, dry skin. It has got a lot better since on thyroxine. Also could be h pylori infection has your doctor explored that option? Its just a stool sample.

blueskys72 · 03/03/2020 13:32

Losing weight!

MoonshineWashingLine · 03/03/2020 13:43

Unfortunately if I lost any more weight I'd be underweight. I need to gain it if anything. I think because I'm almost vegan it's hard to keep the weight on.
I guess if the lanzoprasole doesn't work after a month then the Dr will do some tests. I'll mention thyroid. I have been wondering if I'm deficient in something, take vit D and b12 daily but perhaps I'm low on iron or calcium.

Eating regular meals helps me a lot. Skipping meals really sets mine off. Also not eating before bed helps.

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 15:00

How old are you? You might have a hiatus hernia (common in over 50s).

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 15:02

P.S. they are usually not keen to prescribe PPIs such as omeprazole for more than a month or two as they are not good for you long term.

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 15:03

Sorry lansoprazole not omeprazole (similar drugs).

MoonshineWashingLine · 03/03/2020 15:18

I'm 35 but my mum got a hiatus hernia around my age and has similar issues. I suspect that's the cause, coupled with stress, diet etc.

I had this, was given an endoscopy to check for coeliac and it turned out I had a hiatus hernia and gastritis....I was in my 20s at the time (now 33)

I'm still taking omeprazole, it started working pretty much straight away from what I remember...the only thing that really sets mine off is really acidic things, orange juice is particularly bad

Egghead68 · 03/03/2020 17:44

Probably @Moonshine. Is there anything you can do about the stress?

Elsiebear90 · 03/03/2020 17:45

Only Omeprazole works for me, and limiting alcohol, which I find easy now, but found very hard in my late teens and early twenties.

lazylinguist · 03/03/2020 17:49

Wedge pillow. Gaviscon Advance Aniseed Flavour (works differently from normal Gaviscon and is available from Amazon). Avoid chocolate, coffee, high fat foods, alcohol (especially red wine) and highly acidic foods and drinks.

lazylinguist · 03/03/2020 17:53

Btw if it's high up could it be LPR (laryngopharynhgial reflux) rather than GORD? I think the recommendations are slightly different.

wineandsunshine · 03/03/2020 17:56

God I'm with you! Mine has been playing up for about a month now and I'm getting seriously annoyed!!

I can't work out if the omeprazole is actually helping or not....!

Evenstar · 03/03/2020 17:59

I have a hiatus hernia, had reflux for years before that was diagnosed as I put the coughing down to my asthma. At one point I was on 3 Lansoprazole and 2 Metaclopromide daily. I lost 12 kilos doing low carb high fat and still follow that diet, I was already gluten free and now just have one Lansoprazole at bedtime. I drink minimal alcohol which helps as well.

MrsMozartMkII · 03/03/2020 18:05

I find cutting out sugar, wheat, dairy, and grease.

I also have porridge made with water. It's an acquired taste but helps settle everything.

I feel your pain. I had cookies and a chocolate bar... It's going to take a few days for it all to settle down again. I am officially really (really) stupid.

MoonshineWashingLine · 03/03/2020 20:47

Thanks for all the advice, it's really helpful. I'm rapidly running out of meal ideas though... Might have to get a recipe book. Although I'm not sure if there's such a thing as a vegan, gluten free, low sugar, low acid recipe book Confused
I'm not sure what I can do about the stress, apart from maybe winning the lottery! I keep meaning to try and do some yoga but it's so hard to fit it in.

Mine just went, I suffered for years then it disappeared by magic. It can be attributed to nothing I did differently at all. Been clear for about 8 years now. I have to avoid white wine and raw onion generally as they immediately give me heartburn although I sometimes unwisely partake in Prosecco

emmathedilemma · 04/03/2020 08:36

I had heartburn for a nearly a year and lived on gaviscon and omeprozole. Cutting most dairy (I’m super strict about it) out of my diet helped and now I only get it occasionally, usually from fatty foods on an empty stomach.

Elouera · 04/03/2020 08:41

OP- have you been checked for H pylori? Its usually either a breath test or stool sample test that your GP can organise. I suffered with reflux for years, and spent £££'s on gaviscon/nexium etc.

Treatment includes a course of 2 antibiotics and lanzoprazole and I've never had reflux since! Its certainly worth getting it checked.
