Was this examination of DS appropriate?

I have name changed for this post.

Took DD to an out of hours Doctor due to a prolonged temperature and headache.

After the usual routine checks, the Doctor then asked DS to take off his trousers and shoes so he could feel his abdomen, and had a peek at his penis. When he did this he said 'is it all working down there hey'.

DS was embarrassed and I thought it was strange for an abdomen examination with no warning of it.

He also put a spatula down DS throat twice which made him gag twice and has left him with a sore throat.

Please tell me if I am overreacting. It took me by surprise.

TIA

Ds, how old? Was he checking for uti and enlarged glands in groin?

goose1964 · 01/03/2020 22:16

There's an increase in cases of mumps, maybe he was checking for that.

I'd think it's really strange with no warning.
My 1 year old has been examined by multiple doctors recently and has had thrush a couple of times. And even then they tell me they're going to look under his nappy and ask if that's ok. And he's 1 and non the wiser! Very weird.

I think sometimes Drs forget to ask. I’ve had one yank the tights down on one of our foster children. I had to subtly remind him why she’d come into the care system...

I’ve seen examinations such as the one you describe, on boys too. I think it’s lack of courtesy and thought rather than anything unsavoury.

I would not be ok with the not asking or explaining why at all. I'd be having a quiet word with the practice manager to say that it was an inappropriate way to examine someone, child or adult
