Tooth extraction

Hi all,
I had a tooth extracted at 1pm today(australia) and it's now 6:30pm and I am still in a world of pain. I usually handle pain quite well but this is something else. I've spent the last few hours in tears and in and out of the shower, don't ask why it just seems to alleviate the pain. Tried ice packs, had panadol but nothing is really helping and I'm not sure this level of pain I'm feeling is normal? I have had a tooth extracted before but I can't really remember how it all went, was when I was a teenager. What should I do? God I thought my toothache was bad, what I would do to have my tooth backHmm

Poor you I have had a tooth extracted this morning. I really hope it is not going to be painful as I have work tonight.
How are you now? Have you called the dentist?

rebecca102 · 28/02/2020 13:39

@chocolatespiders Oh no! It's 12:30am and I've just woken up after being asleep for an hr and pain is unbearable. The hole seems to have closed a bit though. Sitting up for now as laying down makes it worse. I can't believe I went in to get the tooth removed because it was playing up to then be left with this.

@chocolatespiders Haven't called dentist, they were closed at 4, I will call them tomorrow if the pain hasn't improved Sad

I am now at the same time scale you were and I dont have any pain. Slight niggle and ache but nothing more - touch wood.
I am going to take some ibuprofen for the swelling.
Have you tried heat on cheek? Guess hot water bottles are not a thing you would have in Australia though.

chocolatespiders · 28/02/2020 15:24

There is dry socket which happens if the formed clot becomes dislodged. But seems to early for the clot to have formed yet but it's worth mentioning.
After 24 hours you can start salt rinses.

I've never had much pain after an extraction.

Was it a difficult extraction?

Have you checked to see if there is a blood clot in the gum?

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 28/02/2020 17:50

Can you get to a chemist and get some Orajel?

rebecca102 · 29/02/2020 08:20

@chocolatespiders Lol hey we have hot water bottles! Tried it also. The pain has subsided thanks to oil of cloves (thanks mum) .Within 5 minutes I couldn't feel a thing. Have to keep putting it on every 3-4 hrs though as it does wear off. How is yours going now?

@CornishPorsche Yep there is a blood clot. It actually was a difficult one, the end of the tooth was bent, not straight down.

@Oopsinamechangedagain2020 My Mum suggest oil of cloves and it worked a treat Grin

I'm 2 weeks from extraction, had 3 teeth out, first tooth no problem has fully healed now, 2nd and 3rd tooth next to each other have been a nightmare, both next to each other, I got dry socket in the big tooth and the pain has been horrendous, the clot dislodged after a couple of hours, got an infection and had to have anti biotics, and the smell from the trapped food was bad too :( my jaw bone was hurting me too, still is now, my bone was exposed and is slowly now the gum is healing over it, it has been getting better everyday but I was totally unprepared for this :( I had to have them put under sedation as I have a fear, and this has done nothing to ease my fears, can't wait for it to be better again.

Tfoot75 · 29/02/2020 08:54

I had one out late last year and it was pretty painful for about 5 days afterwards, but not excruitiating like the toothache was. I had an abscess so the extraction was also agonizing as the anaesthetic didn't work fully. I think my problem was that a fragment of the tooth seemed to be sticking out of my outer gum as I had a very sharp hard lump that was very painful to touch. After 5 days the selling went down and the lump disappeared, so I guess the fragment managed to exit!

toothgenie · 29/02/2020 09:22

If it had been an upper first molar I would have given different advice as there can be a complication after extraction there.
Hope you get some relief soon.

chocolatespiders · 29/02/2020 09:36

I am not needing painkillers 24 hours after mine. But may take some ibuprofen for the swelling. It's just the yucky mouth feeling I am struggling with. He advised to do salt rinses today but I am nervous about doing the first one of them.
Managed to eat some smooth leek soup and some apple puree baby food yesterday which brought back some memories! My children are 22 and 16!
I am missing tea and coffee!
