my hairdresser just found head lice in my hair - mortified

my DD had lice which i treated over the weekend, i also checked my own hair with the nitty gritty but coud not find a thing, however my head has been itching over the last few days but i thought it was dry skin as i have got a dry scalp.

my hairdresser reckons lice prefer people with blonde straight hair over any other hair type/colour why i don't know but that is bad news for me and DD .

My dd gets nits every few weeks this is the first time i have caught them

Hairdresser discovered nits in my 11yo's hair a few months ago. I was mortified: I thought she would have to throw all the other customers out while she got the place fumigated.
To make matters worse, the next time we went, another hairdresser was chatting to me about 'how some parents just don't recognise the signs and then we hairdressers have to tell them their child is infested and that is not nice for us'

cornsilk · 06/09/2007 09:55

I always worry about this when I go to the hairdressers. Combing really is the best way to get rid for good. If everyone in the UK did it over 2 weeks we would all be nit free! For a while anyway...

SSSandy2 · 06/09/2007 10:02

Maybe you got the lice in the hairdressing salon? I'm not convinced they always use clean combs and brushes on your hair.

My nightmare!!!

I always Hedrin everyone before they go just to be safe. I did this last week before my 3 had their hair cut. No lice found. Hairdresser had to cancel so we went a week later. Combed through to make sure they were still clear. No lice. Hairdresser also checked. No lice. Hurray! Sunday night just before all 3 DC due to go back to school and DS#1 on a 5 day residential trip, I investigated some head itching on DS#1s behalf and he had some........ Arrrgggggghhhhh!!!! How? I mean how??? So desperate delousing all round. Just hoping that he is still clear ...mortifying... I hate them...

Hedrin is great but I wish it killed the eggs too.

suzycreamcheese · 06/09/2007 10:15

this is making me itch

dont they have the nit nurse anymore?

as others have said i never had nits at school and had straight long blonde hair
just usually one or two kids had it in the year and due to nit nurse / comb i guess it didnt spread

urrgghh!
..giving me the shudders...

OrmIrian · 06/09/2007 10:16

No I never had nits either suzy. But we slle seemed to get threadworm which is worse in away .....yeucchhh.

suzycreamcheese · 06/09/2007 11:06

oh orm!
cant wait for all this to kick in

off topic but ... i hate people gobbing in the street, i always just refrain from saying how disgusting, it can spread disease..oh i just go queasy when i see it....

OrmIrian · 06/09/2007 11:22

ooooooh me too..... There was a couple of women walking through the park yesterday with toddler and pushchair. At one point one of them hawked and spat which gave me the shudders for a start...but it was done in such a loud and aggressive way somehow as if to say 'f* you!'. Which might have been my imagination of course .

BarbieGirl · 06/09/2007 11:36

My DD is always getting head lice. I use the treatments which don't seem to kill the lice and trying to get the eggs out seems impossible, anyway 2 days after treating the hair I use tea tree shampoo and conditioner and comb through and do this at least twice a week. I have also started putting watered down tea tree oil on DD's hair before school.

All this hard work and within weeks the bloody nits are back again. I just don't get it. what else can a person do????

stleger · 06/09/2007 11:42

Perhaps we need a clique for the terminally infested. I am a mosquito magnet, perhaps some people just attract every headlouse in the class? What a lovely talent to have. When we comb one out now my dd tells me its name as we squish it.

EddieMonsoon · 06/09/2007 11:45

There are nit combs around now which CAN get nits out. Get the metal ones with long prongs, tightly set. There's one by Nitty Gritty which is an award winning one. They can actually get the eggs out but this still needs work. Nits which are flat and white are empty so there's no need to slave over those. Its the plump brown ones which have an embryo in which are the dangerous ones. The chemicals dont work on eggs which are less than 4 days old because the chemicals are neurotoxins and eggs dont have a nervous system for the first 4 days.

BarbieGirl · 06/09/2007 11:46

I am also a mosquito magnet - dread going abroad for that reason alone.

EddieMonsoon · 06/09/2007 12:12

Mosquitos love me too. Try smothering yourself in citronella oil. That should put the mozzies off. I've never had head-lice though (touch wood).

suzycreamcheese · 06/09/2007 12:52

me too...plat du jour for the mozzies..buggers..

midges dont bother me though

but clouds of insects can buzz about me at the park over my head...like the dirt cloud kid from charlie brown
dh laughs and says its my perfume!!

suzycreamcheese · 06/09/2007 12:54

out of interest what blood group are you? am rhesus A negative, is it in our blood...

dh bit once or twice but me, i parted the crowd in a pharmacy in france once i looked such a fright...after trip to camargue it was pitiful

EddieMonsoon · 06/09/2007 12:59

B positive so bang goes another theory!! Apparently its something to do with blood sugar when it comes to headlice but its obviously not the same thing with mozzies. I think mozzies like pale skin and blonde hair or maybe thats just another old wives tale. Actually mozzies like me less as I get older. Must be the leathery old skin putting them off!

stleger · 06/09/2007 15:14

O+,dark. Nitty Gritty combs aren't available here (Ireland) according to pharmacy book! Metal comb removed a lot of dd's hair - one solution I suppose!

toffee218 · 09/02/2009 20:39

God went to toni and guys to have highlights (acadamy) they found a Dead nit i think just at the end of session and refused to blow dry. I felt worse thene a lepor.....that sor t of place i.e really snobby or very young havent a clue of the struggles we go through with nits.
