Mirena - any opinions?

OK, should probably have posted this before having it fitted, but just wanted to know how others have got on with the Mirena IUS. It's fairly vital that I stay baby free for the next two years and wouldn't trust my memory enough to try the pill, so it seemed like a good option. Did you love it or hate it?

I've had mine for nearly a year now. Bled for what seemed a lifetime after fitting and I am still having 'periods' now although much much lighter than they were . I have been told that it can take up to a year for everything to 'settle' in this respect...so I'm still waiting!
On the whole I find it much better than anything else we've tried. I feel confident that the % effectiveness is the same as sterilisation and if I did get pregnant it wouldn't be the end of the world although it would be a little unplanned to say the least!!

susanmt · 02/10/2004 23:57

I think I'm the only Mnetter who has had a mirena failure. Mine slipped down into my cervix following a smear. I then got pregnant and my dd2 is 10 months old. However, the chances of this happening are apparantly 1 : 200 000, so it is more reliable than almost all other forms of contracepition, including the first year of female sterilisation!

I likes it so much (for no periods, no PMT, no migraines) that I ended up having another one put in even though dh has had a vasectomy!

I had it fitted in February last year and have only had two spotting periods since. The only problem is that sometimes dh can 'feel' it and sometimes it hurts during sex. Does anyone else have this problem? I love not having periods but I do feel like ripping it out sometimes if it ruins 'the moment'!

Didn't Pie have a failure too?

anorak · 03/10/2004 15:23

I didn't know you could use one to prevent periods! I have one but I still have periods and they are very heavy usually. And I get pmt. I've had mine for about 3 1/2 years.

It varies from month to month but I think it's much the same over the 3 1/2 year time span.

Eve · 03/10/2004 16:35

I think its fab, had it in 2 years with no problems. Have to see GP once a year to check its still in place.

Only very occasional bleed about once every 3/4 moths but very light.

OxyMoron · 03/10/2004 18:37

So that's a thumbs up from most of you

But ... if it does fail, and you get pg, I guess it needs to be removed, and I guess that puts the pregnancy at risk. Does anyone have any experience of this? No matter how unplanned it might be, I'd still be worried about losing it.

Thanks for your replies, btw. Much appreciated!

oxy, I think the chances of you getting pregnant with it in place are miniscule. I think most pregnancies are because the coil has fallen out (like susanmt) so that isn't really an issue.
mine has been in for a year, periods not gone, but lighter probably (not much), think it aggravates my pmt a bit (or I may just be getting moodier with age) otherwise it is fine.
