Severe tonsillitis and rash?

DD(21) been ill for 2 weeks- glands up, chills, feeling nauseous, hardly eating, diagnosed on Tuesday with severe tonsillitis. After the first week saw GP who prescribe amoxicillin-which seemed to hold it at bay but she got worse as soon as these were finished. GP said to get an emergency blood test at A and E -worried about sepsis- blood tests showed severe bacterial infection- had stronger intravenous ABs then sent home with 7 day oral course.

Was told that she should start to feel better after 2-3 days. She is still quite unwell but slowly feeling a bit better but now has a rash! Phoned 111 and after questions to check not allergic reactions or anything more worrisome ( the rash blanches when you press on it) told her to see the GP which she is about to do.

Anyone come across this before? Google suggests Scarlett fever!

If tonsillitis is caused by streptococcus it can lead to scarlet fever. If she already has a GP appointment then they should be able to check for this. They can test for strep with a swab.

I did come out with a hive like rash from antibiotics once though which was a mild allergic reaction, came down with antihistamine tablet. So this us another possibility

Hope she us on the mend though, sounds like she's been really poorly Flowers

Thanks- never known her so ill! The mild allergic reaction does seem like another possibility- she has never had a problem with penicillin before but this is a very strong dose. Hope she can continue taking them as they seem to be working and the amoxicillin did absolutely nothing.

?? Glandular Fever.
Can cause rash with Amoxicillin.

My son (only 5 at the time) was very ill with tonsillitis and had a red rash too. They thought it was scarlet fever so we were put in isolation in hospital while he was on iv antibiotics and fluids for 3 days. By then the tests came back and it wasn't scarlet fever and 'just' tonsillitis but he was terribly ill.
Hope your dd feels better soon.

ruby29, I'm now having a vague memory of being asked or tested for glandular fever after my rash.

LittleSwede · 14/02/2020 09:53

By the way I only read up on scarlet fever recently after my DD had tonsillitis with very high temp, vomiting and a red rash inside her mouth. GP didn't mention scarlet fever but he did give her some strong and awful tasting penicillin which cleared it.

So just back from GP- thinks it's glandular fever. Asked her to have a blood test in a week? Bit confused as to why not now?

DD is devastated as she has Drama school auditions coming up... she has tried to reschedule but many of them have said no as fully booked...

She has been auditioning for the last few years and got so close.
Poor girl I feel so sorry for her.

Good news is although she has this rash, she is feeling quite a bit better today so hopefully it's on the way out.

Good news that she if feeling better, hope she makes a swift recovery and can attend the auditions. Glandular fever can make you quite run down for a while but hopefully she's over the first of it.

I was going to suggest glandular fever. I recall one of the antibiotics prescribed for my recurring 'throat infection' brought me out in a rash (I've taken it since and had no reaction to it). This was many years ago and I was given several blood tests before it was confirmed as glandular fever as it was apparently difficult to find or something (as I say, it was many years ago so I'd think testing has improved remarkably).

Your poor daughter, it really is horrible. Make sure she rests as much as she can and not to force herself to do things in haste.
