Once your blood pressure has gone down after baby's born
Do you get monitored at the doctor's for your blood pressure?
Or do the just leave you when it's gone down after birth?

I was put on Labetolol after being discharged from hospital then all further appointments at GP to be monitored. It had gone back to normal by 6 weeks so nothing else after that

Nat6999 · 12/02/2020 12:00

It took 3 months for my bp to settle down on medication. I had to take the medication for 6 months. My bp went up again after I discharged myself from hospital but after begging my gp to not send me back in hospital he treated me at home, the midwife came to take it every morning & for the first two weeks my gp called every evening to check it again. He told the midwife to not worry if it went up, he would adjust the medication. It took about a month before it started to reduce steadily. Try & get as much rest as you can & I know it is hard but try to not worry, it will settle eventually.

I wasn't monitored. I was on hospital for a week and bloods and blood pressure taken every day but after that zilch.

purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 17:08

I had pre-eclampsia years ago when my daughter was born
I think they should monitor you more after though. I mean monitor every so often once it has calmed down
And they don't do they

I was put on meds on hospital and after that health visitor took blood pressure a little while. Meds worked well and my blood pressure was normal in couple of weeks.

purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 19:55

Apparently if you have pre-eclampsia you have a higher chance of high blood pressure later
Those is something I didn't know about till now

You have 7 days after the birth where you could still develop eclampsia. If you go home you'll still be checked daily by your MW. I actually had to go back in to be monitored two days after the birth with DC3 as my BP was high and I hadn't had PE on that pregnancy.

I had PE with my previous pregnancies and with the first DC I had to stay in for a week as BP was high for a week!

sawyersfishbiscuits · 12/02/2020 20:03

Lol I think I misunderstood your OP! Whoops

purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 20:05

It's ok don't worry
I also had to stay in for a week after!

I had pre eclampsia with both my babies ( first one I actually had eclampsia- I was not a well girl) over 30 years ago.
It left me with elevated BP afterwards which then got worse....I am now on big gun BP meds. labetolol was the medication I was on in the 1980s!

Waiting1987 · 12/02/2020 20:12

I remember panicking reading about the increased risks later in life if you've had pre eclampsia. You are at increased risk of heart disease and a stroke. No one ever mentioned that to me and I stumbled across it online.

purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 20:41

Yes no one mentioned it to me either.
I'm fact I'm sure I read that people just go back to normal after (ie no mention of increased risk)

I have found out that I do have high blood pressure again. Now the cause is not known yet so I don't know if it is down to this or not but it does make you think. And I never knew till now that you were at increased risk. And my blood pressure wasn't monitored for years after that

I wonder why women aren't told. I had a consultant appointment after the birth to discuss chances of getting it in my next pregnancy, but nothing about long term problems.

This makes worrying reading...

purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 22:46

I just think the doctor should say come in every year or whenever to see the nurse to have your blood pressure taken. Cos what harm will that do. They'd catch it then if it ever happens.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 12/02/2020 22:49

I had no idea till now and you don't get your blood pressure checked unless you've got a specific reason to do it

My blood pressure is taken every year in my medication review. It's been always good.

My mum had pre enclampsia with very high blood pressure. A nurse had to stay with her all the time when she was getting ready to give a birth. She has had high blood pressure ever since and now takes tablets. She is 73 this year.

user1494050295 · 13/02/2020 13:35

I had pre eclampsia ten years ago. In the last year I am now on a daily BP pill to help with my blood pressure. Def weight and stress related. My advice is to keep on at the gp for checks and active monitoring. I am also on the hypertension list so nhs know to be aware of it

user1494050295 · 13/02/2020 13:37

And I took pills for about six months after having my child to try and regulate my BP

ByAppointmentTo · 13/02/2020 13:54

My bp was monitored by the midwife for the first ten days and then checked by GP at six month check. My bp never went back to normal so I've been on medication ever since.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 13:58

My Mum had pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure later in life. I had it and am watching mine at the moment as it is creeping up and I am getting worried.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 13:59

Should have been a comma after the first pre-eclampsia !

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/02/2020 14:03

Preclampsia is linked to various autoimmune diseases that cause high blood pressure - arthritis and lupus for example. Suggest you get a proper work up.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 14:04

I didn’t know that, I have auto-immune thyroid disease as did my mum.

purpleme12 · 13/02/2020 14:09

I just think there are many people who don't take medicine so don't need to go their doctors regularly and often have nothing wrong with them so again wouldn't go regularly. So nothing would get picked up anyway. So it makes sense that someone should say come here every year to get it checked

I had 3 pregnancies with pre eclampsia, Once I hit my 40s I had very high blood pressure , so high my GO told me to take the meds he prescribed immediately and not wait until I got home. I'm now on a cocktail of meds which took years to get to the stage where my bp is now in the middle of the normal range.
