Make-up during MRI

I have had MRIs before but just chatting to someone about an upcoming appointment and they were advised to wear no make-up. Has anyone else found this? I am almost sure I have worn make-up to my previous appointments but apparently some can contain metal traces and therefore cause burning? Now I am doubting whether I have worn make-up at my other scans.

Has anyone been advised not to wear make-up or been uncomfortable because of it?

I’ve had 7 head MRIs and never been told anything about make up.

When I had an MRI recently one of the statements on the form I had to sign was that I am not wearing makeup. I did have a bit of mascara on so queried whether I should wash it off, but was told it would be fine (and it was)

I had a head one a couple of years ago. The leaflet actually said no makeup, but as I was going straight to work afterwards I wore makeup, and took stuff with me in case I was asked to remove it. I wasn’t, and the radiographer actually complimented my lipstick!

It depends what part of you they're looking at.

If you have loads of metallic based eye makeup on, it can make a mess of your head images. And could potentially cause burns! Even if they're not scanning your head.

I think we'll loads more caveats regarding MRI in the future.

Thanks so much everyone. All mine have been of the head but I never remember being told about make-up whereas my friend was advised not to. I am going to work afterwards too so maybe will just wear it anyway. My other scans never mentioned anything but it seems some hospitals even ask you to remove it.

Thanks all for answering and reassuring; as usual doctor google had me worrying about it as soon as I got in.

Wow Miljea had no idea it could mess up the image, that is really interesting!

If you think about it, MRI sort of looks at the 'magnetivity' of all the tissue it's imaging. That isn't an actual word 😂

But if you've massively altered that magnetivity (😊) via introducing metallic fibres or flakes in your makeup, that will alter the appearance of the images. You should see what a non-removed piercing does to an MRI scan!
