Protein in wee

They took a urine sample from me as routine cos I've been put in boots pressure tablets and it's come back as protein in wee apparently.
They need me to do another sample
She wouldn't tell me anything apart from this
I'm scared
Is this bad?

How much protein? A trace could mean being dehydrated or a UTI, a large amount could signify a kidney condition.

purpleme12 · 05/02/2020 13:30

I don't know I'm guessing it's not the first two as they want another urine sample and me to come in for an appointment (my sample came back abnormal the receptionist rang and told me there's no face to face appointments and she could only offer me a phone app. The doctor rang me and told they need another urine sample to know more and me to come in for an appointment). So not happy that wasn't done in the first place. She said there was no rush.
I tried to get more information but she'd only tell me there was protein in my urine.
So I'm scared again. And scared of the appointment. And I don't like this doctor either which doesn't help

This is the first urine test I've had done

If there was a great concern they would have ordered blood tests too.

My DS had very large amounts of protein in his urine and the GP sent him straight to A&E for further tests. As you’ve told there’s no rush I would take that as a good sign and try not to panic.

purpleme12 · 05/02/2020 13:37

Ok thank you I am finding it hard not to panic to be honest. I find her so helpful as well

I've got an appointment next week. I don't understand why she couldn't have made me an appointment when the results came back on Friday if I needed a face to face one and told me they needed another sample then I might have got one this week

GP practice nurse here - protein in urine is often a sign that your kidneys are a bit slow- known as chronic kidney disease. This can be caused by high blood pressure or diabetes. It's not as worrying as it sounds, it just means that you need to keep your blood pressure controlled on the right medication.
The GP will be doing a repeat test because it could be due to a few other things- if you were dehydrated or had just done lots of strenuous exercise that could have affected the result.

I once had a urine test and hadn’t eaten yet that day it was about 1pm and the doctor knew I hadn’t eaten because I was burning up proteins. Could it be that?

purpleme12 · 05/02/2020 13:53

I have had high blood pressure apparently I've started on the blood pressure tablets for a month now. This has only been picked up recently although I'm not sure how long I've had high blood pressure for (I got headaches/migraines for a few years but my head has been clear since on these tablets).

She said to do the first wee of the day so I'd just woken up when I did it

One thing I will say is to make sure that you wipe really, really well and try to give a "mid stream"sample. If you get any vaginal secretions into a urine sample it can give a false positive for protein. Happened to me when pregnant and I was sent immediately to the specialist unit 30miles away - just to test negative when I got there,

Does anyone know

If I had pre-eclampsia when I gave birth is that linked to have high blood pressure later on?
