My 18 yr old DS has constant sickness

I have an otherwise healthy DS who has never had any health issues. He’s had constant nausea for nearly 5 weeks now and has vomited almost every day -generally first thing in the morning. He has absolutely no other symptoms.

He’s doing A levels and I did wonder about stress but he swears he has no anxiety at all. He is extremely laid back, so I feel this isn’t the answer.

Dr initially gave him medication for a stomach ulcer, then changed after two weeks to anti-sickness tablets. Neither have made any difference. He’s due for a blood test today. Dr says he doesn’t know what it could be.

Anyone any thoughts?

Has he had a check up at the opticians? I always mention this option because it can exclude a lot of things. I would mention the morning sickness as a precaution. I've done this myself and I've been greatly reassured.

So after several Drs appointments & blood tests the diagnosis (at the minute) seems to be a vitamin D deficiency.

I’m hoping this is the right diagnosis as Dr has said between 2-6 months for full recovery

My worry is the vitamin d deficiency is a symptom not the cause, and then 6 months will have gone by with no answers

I realise we probably have no choice but to go with this for now

Vitamin D deficiency can be a cause of many symptoms. It's not generally a symptom. It may not be your ds' only cause, but it's a super easy one to treat and has no adverse side effects. It may well be a solution. It's almost certainly part of the solution if it's not the whole solution. Probably the whole family should be taking Vitamin D.

That’s interesting to know. I’m hoping it is a solution

Has he been tested for H Pylori? That causes nausea and is treated with antibiotics.

MissMarianHalcombe · 07/03/2020 17:58

He’s had 3 blood tests so far but not sure if that has been tested for, to be honest.

Are there any other symptoms with that?

Apart from fatigue he hasn’t any others

I would be concerned about these symptoms and the first things that come to mind is raised pressure in his head.
If you get no where by the GP please go to an A&E and ask for a CT of his head.

It could be caused by migraine. As it won't hurt he could try taking a magnesium supplement of at least 400mg per day.

I know it's controversial but I find adding electrolytes to my diet in the form of salt as well as drinking 3 litres of water per day helps massively.

revelsandrose · 07/03/2020 19:53

The h pylori just causes stomach issues, pain and nausea.

iswhois · 07/03/2020 20:11

What time of the day is he throwing up? From about 14-19 I would vomit most every morning due to anxiety.

iswhois · 07/03/2020 20:13

And I didn't "feel" anxious at all. But would wake up with butterflies for no apparent reason and wouldn't feel better until I was sick.

MissMarianHalcombe · 08/03/2020 09:23

Anxiety was the first thing that came up when I googled his symptoms which I know isn’t always the best idea.
I’ve spoken to him several times but he swears he’s not anxious. I also realise anxiety doesn’t always show itself outwardly.
However he’s the most laid back individual you’d ever wish to meet. I’m open to considering anything, I’m not sure it’s mental health related though

Thanks for all your suggestions
Off to investigate

My ds is currently in an active round of Cyclical Vomiting triggered by his anxiety over the potential pain involved in having his wisdom teeth removed. The silver lining is that he's vomiting so much that he hasn't notice that his surgery scars hurt!! Ds was the most laid back child you ever met until the bipolar hit.

Oldmum55 · 09/03/2020 14:05

As Katrina said is the GP concerned about possible pressure in his head? Has this been excluded at least by examination of the back of the eye? Please mention it to an optician, if there was an issue you would be referred to hospital straight away.
