My dt1 had an op done at about 2 years. It seems to be a reasonably straightforward procedure. But get him on the waiting list asap as we waiting well nearly two years

My son had one at 9 weeks. you shouldn't have to wait 2 years now, as waiting times are much better. Surgery seems quite straightforward. General anaesthetic. we stayed 1 night due to age of baby, but if your son is older, might not be necessary. Have you seen GP with it yet?

My DP's DS1 had a Hernia operation at around 12 weeks old. It was quite a complicated procedure so they transfered him to the Manchester Childrens Hospitals about 70 miles away and he was fine. He turns 7 in December and all is well apart from a non hernia related condition.

I had one when I was 4 - but didn't have it removed till I was 5. As far as I remember - I was in hospital for a week.

my ds had one done aged 4.5. he was operated on first thing in the morning, general anaesthetic, then we went home about 7pm. I was amazed at his speedy recovery. we were supposed to stop him 'being active' in any way for 3 weeks afterwards, but he was running (obviously we tried to restrain him!) around 2 days later. he had two minor hernias, one umbilical and one rectal sheath. the first was an incision in his belly button, the second about an inch above and the scar is about an inch/inch and a half across.

My ds had a hydrocele operated on the week after his 5th birthday. He was in and out the same day - it was keyhole surgery so very small incision - although only the left side had started to show they checked the other side and found a hole there too, so he ended up with two incisions. He was a bit grumpy when he came round from the anaesthetic, but we were told to double-dose him with calpol and nurofen which seemed to do the trick. The next day we were supposed to keep him quiet, but we ended up having to take him to the park as he was just as loopily energetic as normal. I was amazed at how quickly he recovered - and now, 5 years later the scars have almost completely vanished unless you look really, really hard
