I know some people swear by them but find Evening prim and Starflower don't really do it for me.

Agnus Castus

Oh hello, yes I've heard of that fella. Tell me more. You take? How long and tell me of your transformation....

G&T

Get it from Holland and Barratt or order from a chemist. The pills are enormous but if I can take them, anyone can. I take 1 a day but you can take two. It had had an effect by my following period so I def recommend. It was my GP who told me to try them.

dissle · 01/09/2007 19:08

cipralex, its an ad but works fab for me.
Small dose.

pre: screaming shouting stabbing motion, rocking in a corner....over a spoon put into the fork section of the cutelry drawer.

now...hmm a spoon in the fork bit, i shall put this where it rightfully belongs, then shall eat some chocolate.

feel the tension coming, maybe over one day feel BAD but not for a week at a time pre drugs!

truly, my kid would have been taken off me and my husband would have left me had i not sorted myself out.

Toots · 01/09/2007 20:21

Glad things are so much better dissle. I would always try to avoid ads as they make me so tired. But will look into agnus castus. Anyone else reccommend them?

i tried agnus castus a few years back but they made my water retention worse and did nothing for the mood swings.have heard magnesium is meant to be good.

i am on venlafaxine now,its for PND really but i have been suffering horrendous PMT since having children, which got worse with each child, and last month(my first on the new ad's)i hardly had any mood problems atall, whereas the previous months i would have been asking dp who he was having an online affair with and when he was flying off to america to be with them.

i found prozac helped with the desire to kill queue-jumpers and the screaming at the kids for leaving a cup on the floor when i was on it.that never made me tired either.

divastrop · 01/09/2007 20:34

some useful info

Toots · 01/09/2007 20:42

Thanks for that Divastrop.

Any advice in there for agonizingly painful cramps - i am full of 'em tonight...oooooooowwwwwww!

newlifenewname · 01/09/2007 21:02

Hmm, now I'm about to visit my gorgeous Dr G for the same problem. He put me on Fluoexetine recently as I have been to hell and back in the last several months (Prozac) and that is chilling me out a teeny bit but this last period has been a NIGHTMARE. I was shouting, smacking and absolutely exhausted right up until today, and now I feel low because of all the shouting and smacking and loafing about over the last few days. Is a vicious circle.

I'll be fine from now up until a few days past ovulation, mark my words. And, every other period is bad iyswim so next month won't be as bad as this one.

divastrop · 01/09/2007 21:23

GB-have an orgasm(not the cocktail)

newlife-i only found prozac helped a tiny bit with the agression etc.i have just been reading that there are different 'types' of pmt, which need different treatments(although it only went on about alternative treatments).

here

written by a man,i think.my dp says that PMT should be re-named EFN;-excuse for narkiness

GodzillasBumcheek · 01/09/2007 21:29

Lol...actually i am fairly sure that would work, but no chance at the mo.

Newlife - hope your doc gets you something better. Have given up on doctors for anything - they are all useless.

puffylovett · 01/09/2007 21:38

hi not read whole thread ... in my work we always recommend the following -

agnus castus (tincture if you can get it as it works faster) x30 drops twice daily

magnesium tabs x 1 or 2 daily

High strength GLA x 1 or 2 daily

works nearly every time - and if it doesn't work, there is definitely an underlying problem that needs resolving

and we've treated hundreds of women with PMS

newlifenewname · 01/09/2007 21:46

Not wishing to hijack but thanks Diva - I will have a read of that.

You know, I do remember that when I very first did Atkins that my PMT disappeared and I know GPs will often recommend cutting down on sugars and carbs as a treatment so maybe there is something in that.

Re. Prozac, it seems to be keeping me quite level day to day (not that I wasn't calm but I do tend towards OCD and starving myself when life gets a bit out of control) but like Diva says, the aggressiveness is right back there at PMT time. It is like being some drunk aggro bloke and I just lose all persepective and rant about tiddly things.

I live next door to the village shop so half the village probably hears me shrieking at the children.

The last time I saw (different) GP about this she just said to try the Pill...again. This has never worked so far for me.

puffylovett · 01/09/2007 21:49

newlife - Diet DEFINITELY plays a part in these things. if you had a high sugar and refined carb diet (ie lots of white bread) it can exacerbate the problem.

Would definitely be a good idea to reduce the above and increase veg, salad, fruit and wholewheats / grains and also to drink lots of water - upto 2 litres daily.

JackieNo · 01/09/2007 21:59

I've found Magnesium-OK really helps me (as long as I remember to take it regularly). Used to be very narky for about the week before, and have very painful breasts, but now no pain, and much less grumpy.

NAB3 · 02/09/2007 16:31

Just found out you shouldn't take Agnus Catus or St John's Wort if you are on the pill. HTH.

Toots · 04/09/2007 19:41

Have bought tincture but forgotten to take it today. Feeling less furious though as period has started so that's a relief.

Update on this. Have, quite literally been free of PMT for 5 months. Amazing.

For 3 months I took

4/6grams (really, that much) of Evening p
300mg B6
Magnesium a day
and agnus castus twice daily.

Then I cut down the dose down to about a quarter and just take ag castus from ovulation on.

This was recommended by a nutritionist who said I should flood the system with the ePrimrose.

I'm thrilled and feel freeeeeeeee!
