Kidney and bladder scan....I'm worried as late DF had cancer in his bladder

For the last few weeks I've had frequent urination issues.Maybe months actually.Sometimes I feel like I leak slightly.😧I assumed it was because I'm menopausal.I'm 53.
Last week I was a GP who said I had a slight prolapse from having dcs.She examined me and said a urine.test and blood test for kidney function and to check for cancer according to the nurse.I have a scan of my kidneys and bladder next week which seems to have been rushed through.
Dm had ovarian cancer stage 4 D f had cancer that was aggressive and popped up everywhere including his bladder.
I am a little worried now having watched them to through treatment.
Am I jumping the gun?

Sorry you have this worry awaiting scans and family history. Do you know what you father's primary cancer was?

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer after sudden cystitis type symptoms in 2018 and was told it was rarely a secondary by the urologist. But a male patient told me that he had had Bowel cancer and then bladder cancer as a secondary. For men bladder cancer is usually an easy one as diagnosed early and have thicker bladders than women which endure the treatment better.
My neighbour told me her husband had bowel cancer and prostate cancer and lived very well with both for 20 years.

My first test was a Cystoscopy which diagnosed my bladder cancer- that is a narrow tube with a light on the end and a camera .
Then I had a CT to examine the kidneys and tubes which were all clear of spread.
53 is 20 years younger than I was and means you are highly likely to be diagnosed in the ealry stages which means it will be only in the lining. Mine was already muscle invasive but still confined to the bladder. You may not have it as I believe that bladder cancer is not common in women as almost double of the cases are in men.

It is good that the vartious tests are being done quickly to rule cancer out or confirm at an early stage and easier to treat.

How old were your parents when they were diagnosed?

whatisforteamum · 31/01/2020 17:42

Sorry to hear about ur diagnosis.Did you just.have vague symptoms may I ask?I had kidney stones and bleeding years ago so I had a cytoscopy as they thought I had the symptoms of bladder cancer then.
D m was 64 Df in his 70 s.First with prostate then discovered to have small ce l cancer that is aggressive. So not a typical prostate cancer.turned up in.his bladder spine th en brain.
Please tell me what happened to you.
I had nt considered it maybe serious

Hi OP, really sorry you’re going through such an anxious time.
Just wanted to say that even though your DF had cancer, the odds are still in your favour. Even though you have a family history, it is still far more likely that you do not have cancer.
Also just wanted to say that bladder cancer isn’t particularly hereditary. Certain cancers like breast cancer are very much hereditary but that’s not the case for bladder cancer.
Really hope it’s good news for you. Take care of yourself Flowers

Farmgrl1111 · 31/01/2020 18:37

Also was your father a smoker? What job did he do?
Bladder cancer is one of the cancers most likely to be caused by occupational hazards such as breathing in chemicals in the workplace. It’s also one of the most common cancers in smokers

Lovemusic33 · 31/01/2020 18:51

I had all the tests a few years ago including a cytoscopy. My symptoms were similar to yours, my samples always showed blood and I often had uti symptoms, I was told I probably have kidney disease but all my scans and cytoscopy came back clear. I still have traces of blood now and still get UTI’s but was told I have the healthiest looking kidneys they have seen.

whatisforteamum · 31/01/2020 18:59

Yes he worked in the film industry. The smell of chemicals when we went there as kids was overwhelming!.He loved a cigar as a treat on a special occasion He gave up smoking cigs in his 20s.
It did say family history played a part on bladder cancer uk.
DM was tested for BRACA gene which was negative.
I am being silly I just watched them go through chemo twice each and numerous ops then see death.I kind of put cancer aside.after years watching them suffer

Thank u love. My urine was negative for uti s and I'm sure lots of conditions cause my symptoms.s
I know they have to do tests I just wondered if the GP noticed blood or anything else. She didn't say.

OP.
My symptoms were sudden and out of the blue, but included burning urination and getting up in the night many times, plus weight loss and lower back pain which I had put down to be sciatica as did have slipped discs since 2015. A sudden appearance of lot of blood appeared in the month before it was diagnosed.
I suspected it might be cancer by reading macmillan and cancer research UK, and the average age was 73 my age. But still wanted it ruled out not confirmed.

Had 2 ops and 33 sessions of radiotherapy and am due to have it checked next Tuesday.

Your DM's Ovarian Cancer is one that is usually diagnosed in the late stages as has no symptoms in the early stages, so they probably want to rule that out or catch it early .
Good luck and hope it is nothing but overactive bladder which can be treated with Oxybutynine or similar. Dsis is taking Betmega for a leaky bladder.

Sorry about your parents.

ahran2k · 31/01/2020 20:39

@whatisforteamum please don't worry too much , it could be something harmless as well. Last year I had 2 kidney stones. I had frequent urination , pain in bladder but no uti. If you have a history of kidney stones then it might just be stones.

Tanfastic · 31/01/2020 20:45

I had similar symptoms, microscopic blood in wee, frequent cystitis.

Had a bladder and kidney scan and a cystoscopy and got the all clear.

I'm just one of those people who just had micro blood in urine with no obvious cause. Urologist said very common and nothing to worry about.

whatisforteamum · 31/01/2020 21:21

Thank you all.Yes Dms cancer was.advanced and she was full of ascites. But that was 13 years ago and despite a.recurrence she is still here😊.
I hope it is an overactive bladder as I only go once in the night.
Good luck tue didgerd x

OP Your DM is certainly a lucky 'superwoman'.
At my worst I counted 15 times doing just a teaspoon each time and then gave up. Last night was only 4 times between 10pm and 5am.
My only fear is that the procedure into my bladder next Tuesday will set me back again as I was warned that the treatment might make my symptoms worse long term Confused. And oncologist said that the radiotherapy can shrink the bladder and make it hold less.
All the best.

Fantail · 01/02/2020 08:49

I had a benign tumour removed from my bladder 3 years ago.

I was freaking out that it might be cancer, and then the Urologist pointed out when I told me it wasn’t, that I wasn’t a male, in my 60s or older, had never smoked, and didn’t work anywhere that involves heavy chemicals. So few women are diagnosed with bladder cancer that most the stats about treatment you find on the internet refer to men.

It was picked up during a kidney scan to follow up with micro-album uriea.

From memory, the normal initial treatment is removal of the tumour. I think followed up with additional treatment (radiotherapy I think) if necessary.

whatisforteamum · 01/02/2020 09:25

Hi Fantail.Thank you for sharing. That is reassuring.I'm glad you're was benign.
I initially went as it was driving me crazy and constant peeing can be a sign of ovarian cancer. It was really the way the scan letter appeared a couple of days later that for me niggled.
Yes didgerd my dm is superwoman. The consultant can't believe she beat the odds of stage 4 twice! The docs initially.said in the past she would be lucky to get a year.New chemo s and treatments saved her life😊 df too had longer than expected.

whatisforteamum · 04/02/2020 17:31

I had the scan and the bladder looks clear😁.The sonographer told me there is something in my left kidney she thinks is a stone and is referring me for a transvaginal scan due to my family history for peace of mind.
I didn't think they could tell the patient anything there and then which is why my parents waited for results.Has this changed recently.?

Babysharkdoodoodood · 10/02/2020 18:27

I've just been fast tracked onto what they call the 2WW for urology and I'm (figuratively) peeing myself.
I've had blood in my wee and really bad pain in my back and urethra. Been in antibiotics for a fortnight and nothings changed. Was in casualty Friday night/Saturday morning because of the blood, and I've got diabetes t2.

Had Breast cancer in 2012 so naturally now I'm panicking like mad. Does the camera up your urethra hurt? So sick of needles and tubes.

whatisforteamum · 11/02/2020 08:00

It is more uncomfortable .I found that the next day I couldn't stop peeing all day!!I hope you just have kidney.stones like myself.I haven't had the official results yet but painful kidney stones is preferable to cancer obviously.
Good luck.
