Sorry for the horrible picture, having problems with my toes for a while, thickening and misshaping etc but this big toe is awful, thought whatever it might be might grow out but hasn’t, have tried applying vicks vapour rub to it but hasn’t done anything, wondering if it’s a fungal infection and if so what can I buy to get rid? Only this toe affected.

Fungal infection

Get anti fungal paint from pharmacist

May not work though in which case you need anti fungal pills from GP (3 months and they taste foul)

TheMemoryLingers · 26/01/2020 00:26

I'd be making a non-urgent GP appointment with that toe - it looks as though it might be infected. Vicks won't do it any good, OP. Hope you can get it sorted out soon,

I’m not a chiropodist, but...

The NHS website suggests seeing a pharmacist for anti-fungal cream (will take months of treatment) or, if serious, a GP for prescription medication (may take months of treatment).

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fungal-nail-infection/

There was a programme called the Toe Bro (like Dr Pimple Popper, but for feet), in which the Canadian chiropodist would remove fungal nails (after applying local anaesthetic), as a more immediate cure for fungal nails, but warned it would take 12 months for them to grow back fully.

Mumdiva99 · 26/01/2020 00:37

Toe Bro can be found on uTube. Some of his vids are toe cringingly gross and strangely compelling....

MrsEricBana · 26/01/2020 00:38

Probably fungal melanonychia which will need oral antifungals for 3 months or so. If so it won't go on it's own. Maybe not though. GP not podiatrist needed. Hope you're better soon.

Dr Pimple Popper fan here and making mental note to check out 'Toe Bro'.

Fungal nail infection. Bathe in salt water. Dry thoroughly and apply tea tree oil - let it sit on the nail and sink in while it dries. Keep feet open to air as much as possible and repeat the T T oil treatment every 2-3 days. Fungus needs dark warm conditions to breathe - fresh air and light is part of the cure.

I treated my elderly parent's (much worse) chronic toenail infection this way and it worked wonders, but took time.

TiredMaofTwo · 26/04/2020 12:09

I had problems for a long time with my big toenail getting really thick and turning yellow. Also skin at bottom of nail getting puffy and red. Went to docs got tablet (which can cause liver probs) but it didn’t work. Tried anti fugal paint on nail treatment from chemist, didn’t work. What did work was eating live yogurt (I got Irish Diet Yogurt can get in Sainsbury’s) and Roquefort cheese (unpasteurised) so not suitable if pregnant. As your nail has to grow out if will take time but I’m delighted as I can now wear sandals.

Hi you can get a pharmacist to assess this (my son had a very similar one - the pharmacist said it wasn't infected but sent him to the doc on the grounds it was too bad for over the counter treatment, but at the docs the doc warned against taking the oral drugs just now because of the rare but not super-rare side-effect that it can mess around with your immune system which seems a bad idea in the light of the pandemic. We're therefore doing nothing until Covid is over.
