Please help me through my tooth extraction decision.

I have been putting off my tooth extraction for years now and the tooth has now split. I have been to the dentist today and he wanted to do it there and then - I burst into tears ffs.
I have had two children and didnt need pain relief so I thought I could handle pain quite well. I think it is the thought of the pulling and the waiting for it to be done I just cant bear the thought of it.
I could pay for sedation but this feels like dead money but if it is the only way for me to get through it it may be worth it
Would you get sedated for this? Please make me see sense.

Could I be referred to a more specialist dentist from my practise?

NRTFT, but a split tooth will often come out quite easily as it's already in pieces. With plenty of Novocaine you should really feel very little.

@ScaredyCat123 I went back to dentist she said I didnt have infection. She said because I had a nasty infection it will take a while to heal. She took the stitches out and packed it with the brown stuff you were on about. Tasted disgusting antiseptic iodine. Yuk. I've lost weight too!! Hope yours gets better soon xx

ScaredCat123 · 11/02/2020 07:50

@Kitcat47
Do you have to go back to get your socket re-packed at some point? My dentist said once will be enough for me as the socket isn't deep but I have read some people needing theirs repacking ...
I have lost my faith a little in all things dentistry and tooth related after this experience hence questioning everything...

Kitcat47 · 22/02/2020 14:14

@ScaredyCat123 how is your mouth?

@chocolatespiders did you get your tooth out?

EnidBlyton · 22/02/2020 14:19

I also got a prescription for Diazepam for tooth extraction

I’ve just had my wisdom tooth out. There is no way in hell I’d have done it without pain relief and if I have to get it done again, I’d go for a GA. I had to get 2 injections because I still felt pain after the first. It took about 15 minutes to get it out and it was horrendous.

HighOnStilts · 22/02/2020 14:26

I've had a lower incisor pulled due to over crowding of my lower teeth when I had braces when I was a teen - the thought of having an incisor pulled rather than a molar really freaked me out! I only had local anaesthetic and it was over in what felt like seconds, it honestly wasn't as bad as I'd made it out in my head and I'd worried weeks before I had it done. Go for it girl, you'll be fine! X

KittyCuckoo · 22/02/2020 18:19

After stressing about my first molar and the start of 2 root canal treatments, my dentist referred me to a specialist. He did a 3d scan which showed the wisdom tooth had a chronic infection and was impacted. He thought that may be the problem so I had it removed under GA yesterday. It had never caused me any problems until the last 10 days when I've been in agony.
The extraction went fine. GA went fine. Phew.

BUT the original molar has now stepped up to the mark and I'm on codeine, ibuprofen and paracetamol. I've spoken to the emergency dentist today (Saturday)and will try and see my own dentist on Monday. I'm completely debilitated - been in pain from teeth for the past month, and had just got over a serious ear infection which started at the beginning of December so I'm pretty fecking miserable. The painful tooth will have to be extracted. I am in such pain that I think I'll do anything including having it out without sedation or GA. I think...maybe not. I'm terrified.

I've had several teeth extracted, and more root canaled, due to untreated decay (due to neglect and dental phobia). With proper local anaesthesia the treatment is painless. Sedation is good for some people but it's not what I wanted; some dentists regard it inappropriately as a magic bullet.

What's needed is quite simple: a good dentist! To do the anaesthetic injections without themselves being painful takes patience and skill. Some people have nerves in uncommon places which need extra injections to numb, a few people even need a different type of anaesthetic that the dentist will have to specially order. Your dentist needs to pay attention to you, to believe you when you say you're in pain and to address it and not blindly carry on. It's all simple stuff but there are a lot of bad dentists that don't do any of that.

I'm now with a private dental surgery with an emphasis on treating nervous patients. I've been treated by three dentists there, as well as referred to other dentists for emergency and specialist treatment, and it's all been excellent. It's not cheap, but personally, I wouldn't touch an NHS dentist with a bargepole now.

Since a root canal last week, I've been pain-free for the first time in months. It's such a difference.

Safariboot - I agree about nhs dentists. I struggle to pay for private treatment but it's worth it.

ScaredyCat123 · 25/02/2020 18:51

@Kitcat47
Extraction site is much better but it has taken me over three weeks to get her. Still get niggley pains now and then and I still have a little white patch on the extraction site but managing to eat soft and not to hard food. Good a little over enthusiastic today and ate some potato chips on the extraction area which caused pain but it is progress as before I would not have eaten put the chips in my mouth! Back to the dentist for a check up in 12 days time ...
Hope you are ok with your extraction ....
X

chocolatespiders · 28/02/2020 12:28

I got through it!!!! Yippee!
Dentist was patient and reassuring. After the local injection I could not feel a thing.
He talked to me the whole time as he was manipulating it out which took minutes.
Home now and resting hope pain doesn't ramp up later as I have work.
Was going to have a drink through a straw but just read that is a bad idea.
Really should have ate before I went but I was too anxious!

@chocolatespiders well done you have been a lot braver than me!! Hope it is ok later. Xx

KittyCuckoo · 28/02/2020 15:13

Well done @chocolatespiders
And good luck @Kitkat47

I have to wait until 23 March to have 2 molars extracted. My anxiety levels have hit new heights - just been prescribed antidepressants and meds for blood pressure as that is so high the aneasthetist won't sedate me unless it's lower. I am officially a Mess.

chocolatespiders · 28/02/2020 15:19

I think the wait/ anticipation is the worse bit, I have not been sleeping worrying and thinking about it in the night.
This thread helped massively. This morning I woke up with a calm feeling and although was nervous as I entered the room I knew it had to be done as the tooth has been playing me up for years. I breathed deep and he told me the worse bit was the injection and he was right and that was only a scratch.
To scared to drink or eat but need to have some painkillers soon and might try some apple puree.

Hope you are okay Kittycat, I am currently cuddled up with my 6 month kitten.
