Bladder/urinary infection

Help me sound convincing. I took the day off work today with period-type pains, obviously alarming as I am 10 weeks pg, and don't want to take any chances. When I rang in sick this morning (they don't know I'm pg, and I'd rather they didn't for now) the only thing I could think of to say was that it was a urinary infection.

So help please in lying convincingly. What symptoms, what drugs? what relieves it? how long does it take to clear up? how long can I reasonably take off work?

You silly...
Ok, when you go back in, say you've been drinking lots of cranberry juice and "something the chemist gave me", so it only hurts a little bit when you wee, and you only have to go every hour or so not every ten minutes like it was.

fisil · 30/09/2004 17:30

Well, they know I've been to the GP and got drugs from him. Have I messed up?

Ok, I'm not exactly condoning this, but as you're such a sweetie..

You're taking an antibiotic (you forget the name, but it's the one for a uti, not a kidney infection, luckily you caught it before it progressed), but it's a fairly short course. It's already started working and you're feeling much better.

Someone will come up with the UK antibiotic I'm thinking of, but will have a look around and see if I can find it.

JJ · 30/09/2004 17:36

Argh, please don't take the "not condoning this" seriously -- was trying to sound school marm-ish.

Marina · 30/09/2004 17:36

Just say they gave you Septrin and if you feel to take more time off that you experienced side effects with it...they won't want to check with your GP will they?
Hope you are feeling OK and that the pains have gone.

MTS · 30/09/2004 17:39

antibiotics (including I think Septrin) can upset your tummy - the perfect side effect to explain prolonged absence. just mention the words gut flora and i am sure nobody from your work would want you to give any more explanations

Flossam · 30/09/2004 18:05

The GP would normally prescribe you trimithropin in the first instance. Would only probably be a three day course. Its and antibacterial. They wouldn't normally prescribe antibiotics till they had some sensitivities back from the urine sample you would have been asked to provide had you really been!! GP would also advise you to avoid caffiene and drink lots of fliuds. HTH!!

Marina · 30/09/2004 18:20

That's the one Flossam! Can you believe a GP recently tried to prescribe it for dd's ear infection....
Works all right on UTIs though as I recall

Flossam · 30/09/2004 18:21

Never heard of it for that Marina! Oh dear!

Marina · 30/09/2004 18:23

Yes, well it didn't work I think the patronising lecture about how this GP had been a microbiologist previously, when even I queried the scrip, was the final straw.
Flossam, I get the impression you live round my way (Sidcup traffic incident). You might even know this GP although I am 101% sure you are not she!

Flossam · 30/09/2004 18:39

I doubt it Marina! I'm in east london and work in south east hospital. Moving out to classy essex soon hopefully! Don't have much to do with GP's in my job thankfully! I'm a nurse too, so aren't too likely to come across one. I have come across a dodgy one personally though, told me not to take my inhalers whilest pregnant!

fisil · 30/09/2004 19:11

Thanks all - love the double act Marina & Flossam!

Right, so I have a urinary tract infection. Cramps around my tummy and lots of weeing with a slight burning sensation. Doctor gave me prescription for something or other (trimithropin?) which seems to be doing the trick, along with drinking copious amounts of water and cuddling up in bed with a hot water bottle. Should be back in work in a couple of days. If, however, it doesn't work then I'll have the ultimate get out clause with the Septrin.

Still have pains in my tummy and feeling fairly sensitive. I'll wait to see how I feel tomorrow - one thing I've learnt about pg is just not to go in for heroics!

Oh, and JJ I used to think this kind of lying was terrible, but my GP surgery fully supports, even encourages it, so ...

I really was just joking -- trying to be all holier than thou!

Congrats by the way! Hope everything is ok.

Shoot - I meant to ask Flossam where in E London she is and about the practices there.

Um, Flossam, whereabouts in E London are you and do you have a recommendation for an NHS practice in the Victoria Park area?
