Unable to have Dental Fillings

I am currently unable to have a filling done on a painful tooth as my dentist is unable to get me numb enough to complete the work. She has tried three times and used different injections, as recommended by a dental hospital so has referred me to this hospital.
After waiting 6 months for the referral appointment I went to the nhs dental hospital yesterday. The department I was referred to did investigations including xrays and said the hospital would need to try to do the filling themselves. They then said their department only removed teeth so they would have to refer me to the department across the corridor and to expect another 6 month wait as this would be a new referral.
Does anyone know if there is anyway I can complain about having to wait again as presumably I have been referred to the wrong depart, ent. and this is hardly my fault and I am sick and tired of putting up with the tooth pain that started almost a year ago.

I've got decay under one of my fillings but it doesn't give me pain every day like yours does, that doesn't sound right to me! And could explain why it's not numbing properly.

DentalPatient · 16/01/2020 12:58

Floofen, sorry what would explain why it’s not numbing?

@DentalPatient infections cause pain and stop the injections from working.

FloofenHoofen · 16/01/2020 13:20

Have you been given antibiotics to see if that would take the pain away yet?

Bansku19 · 16/01/2020 14:53

Could you have it fixed without local anesthetiser? I had several done without when I was a child. It isn't nice but I managed. If there were in position that local anaesthesia wouldn't work I would let them do it without.

DentalPatient · 17/01/2020 20:34

It’s too painful to work on without injections, I have had that done on other teeth.
I haven’t been given antibiotics but there is no sign of infection on the xrays and the pain is mainly with hot/cold and when eating.

@DentalPatient

You sound in such a similar position to the one I was in. I had no sign of infection on the X-Ray, but they gave me antibiotics anyway.

When the tooth was finally extracted, the dentist showed me a little ball of an abscess at the root tip.

Where about are you in the country, as maybe I could recommend another dentist in your area?

GeePipe · 17/01/2020 22:24

You could have hypermobility syndrome like me and a pp on here. I found out last week having hms can mean anaestetic doesnt work as well for us. Which makes sense as i once had 4 teeth out and had 13 numbing injections and still felt everything. Hope you get it sorted. Can you try a traininghospital? Liverpool has a dental schoool that sometimes helps with these issues.

DentalPatient · 18/01/2020 20:17

Thing is I’ve had tonnes of fillings in the past with no problems and don’t have any signs of hyper mobility. My son does though, he has double jointed elbows and can pop one of his hips in and out.

Is it a back molar? They're renowned for being difficult to anaesthetise apparently

DentalPatient · 18/01/2020 21:04

Yes a molar.
