Tinnitus...will it go away? :(

Hi 👋

I went out on Thursday to a pub to meet a friend, and I listened to my music on my phone wow headphone whilst on the journey to and from the pub. (I didn't think my headphones were too loud!)
In the pub we were a table away from the speakers/music.

Since then my ears have been ringing, I have to play some music whenever I'm alone as otherwise it's all I can hear :( I'm so scared I've damaged my hearing and I'll have to live with this forever !

Can anyone reassure me / advise ?

Help!

I'm not a doctor, so I probably can't give much reassurance, but I know from personal experience that ringing in the years is not necessarily a permanent thing. It sounds like you've damaged them a bit and over time if that damage gets a chance to repair then I assume the ringing will reduce (in my case, my ears got a bit blocked and the build-up was causing the ringing - sorted out the block and now I'm fine).

Worth getting your GP to look in your ears if it's still there tomorrow.

@DadDadDad Thank you. I think I will go to the GP. It's just nice to ' hear' people's experiences.c

No problem. I know that this kind of thing while not painful can be very uncomfortable and quite miserable. I hope it clears up soon.

Just digressing slightly but did you know that in this country ,there is no legislation to protect members of the public from excessive noise in public performance venues? The only duty to protect is toward employees under the HSWA. So for those who go to rock concerts etc,, the sound desk can have it up as loud as they want. Theyve all got ear plugs in.

jadey0885 · 17/01/2020 10:27

I had this but after 10 min of ringing I have now gone deaf in one ear. I'm not trying to scare you not go and check it out.

Elmo311 · 17/01/2020 12:51

@jadey0885 I'm so sorry, that's awful. I can still hear just fine, it's mainly when I'm alone and it's quiet that I notice the ringing.

Oh that's a good thing then. Maybe it will go after some time. If it doesn't I recommend you go doctors and see what they say.

Elmo311 · 17/01/2020 14:43

@jadey0885 I will do. I just don't see them helping very much!

DH is really suffering at the moment. He went to GP and then consultant, who confirmed nothing drastically wrong, other than he has to fly frequently. Yours might just go, but if it endures, DH was recommended "Tinnitus" tracks off YouTube. They work to train the brain to block out the ringing. He goes to sleep listening to these tracks now, and says it is really helping. You have to find the one that suits your own level of pitch, he really likes the crickets and thunder storms one.

jadey0885 · 17/01/2020 15:04

Let me know how you get on

Elmo311 · 23/01/2020 11:53

Just updating incase anyone needs this in future, it's taken a couple of weeks but it has gone!
I'm so relieved :)

If I was you OP I would really limit your exposure to loud music.

Elmo311 · 23/01/2020 14:20

@misspiggy19 That does make sense, I was thinking that I need to be careful as I've obviously already caused some damage!

Glad it's gone nowSmile

saraclara · 23/01/2020 16:08

I'm glad you're better, OP. Tinnitus sucks.

Mine is permanent, but fortunately not severe, and it doesn't really affect me much. But I'd be glad to see the back of it all the same. And I go to great lengths not to do anything that might make it worse (I check medication side-effects, so no more Ibuprofen for me, for instance)

Apparently flying is okay though. Both the ENT consultant and the tinnitus therapist I was referred to confirmed that I don't need to worry about it contributing to any further deterioration.

jadey0885 · 23/01/2020 23:51

I'm glad it went to. Unfortunately for me I'm still deaf in one ear. I had an audio test done again and they say that I need a hearing aid. Blush

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 24/01/2020 18:51

what's the story about ibuprofen and tinnitus?

I get it for a few seconds as my nasal cycle changes. My Eustachian tubes aren't great and nor are my sinuses. I suspect it's a part of my future but obviously would like to delay that by as long as possible.

jadey0885 · 31/01/2020 23:19

#layallyourloveonme... I don't know what you could do. Have you gone GP

Pleasedontdothat · 01/02/2020 07:41

I have permanent tinnitus in my right ear caused by Menieres- when it first started, I thought the constant noise would drive me mad (it’s the pitch a washing machine makes at the height of its spin if you strip out all the lower tones). But, you gradually get used to it and learn almost to tune it out and it becomes background noise - a bit like living near a noisy road - the first time you go there you think how could anyone bear this, but pretty soon it just becomes normal. I’m glad yours is better OP but even if it comes back, it’s not as bad as you think it’s going to be
