Ankle op - any essential post surgery aids?

themuminator · 12/01/2020 10:02

Having an op on my foot on Tuesday. 2-4 weeks complete bed rest, 8-12 weeks in cast.

I have a shower stool, rented a knee scooter, limbo leg baggy thing for showering.

Apart from having a butler I can't think of anything else to make this easier.

Oh and my partner just moved out!

Anyone got any tips?

A flask and a travel mug like a contigo so someone can leave you with hot drinks for the day - hopefully you still have some adult help!

A water bottle that can carry hot drinks so you can put the hot drink in it and do it up and take it to another room.

A way of getting food from the kitchen to wherever you eat (I had to eat my dinner on the kitchen floor for a few days but I didn't have a knee scooter)

3 ice packs to use on rotation (still works outside of cast). Laxatives (you may need these if they give you certain types of painkillers) and OTC painkillers.

When I had an op ( Kidner procedure ) I had a wheelchair for in the house to get food and drinks to and from the kitchen, at the time my son was only 16 months old so using the wheelchair was much more safer than crutches. I'd also recommend a decent pillow to pop your foot on in bed and if possible a frame to raise your duvet off your foot as it's amazing how heavy the duvet feels when you've had a op. Good luck and wish you a speedy recovery Smile

A backpack to carry things around the house and making a packed lunch in a lunchbox is far easier than trying to manage a plate. 2 sets of crutches-one for upstairs and one for downstairs, saves trying to get them up and down all the time x

Yes yes yes to a decent flask and back pack. I was in a similar situation and these 2 items meant that I could sort myself out with food and drink.

Thanks so much everyone, these are all great ideas.

How do I get 2 sets of crutches? I'm presuming they will give me one set.

I must buy a flask with a properly fitting screw top lid as my keep cups aren't going to cut the mustard!

Off to do some amazoning now!

I found the crutches supplied by the nhs were not great so I bought a better quality set from amazon-they weren't overly expensive and well worth the cost if like me you will be using them for a relatively long time x
