Where's my coil?

I've had a coil since just after dd was born. This month I forgot to check the threads after my period, so did so this morning but couldn't find them. I'm really confused - surely it couldn't have come out without me noticing? Or could it have somehow disappeared inside? Am now worrying that I could be pregnant, which wouldn't be ideal (although not a disaster) All advice gratefully received

Have another rummage around later, and remember to feel all around the cervix. Sometimes the strings sort of tuck up the side.

If you really can't find them see the GP who can refer you for a rapid ultrasound to check it's position. It's unusual not to notice one coming out but some women lose it and don't realise. Occasionally the strings retract into the cervical canal, the coil is still there but you can't get to the strings.

if you cant wiat til friday make an appt with the nurse who will check for you

you DONT NEED A DR TO DO THIS !

LIZS · 29/08/2007 12:36

Even the nurse had problems finding my threads ! t'was still in place though

Sidge · 29/08/2007 12:36

Yes, a nurse can check for you but can't refer you for an ultrasound. But if they are good at your practice she might be able to check for you then if you need an USS fill in a form and just get the GP to sign it without you having to see the GP. Depends on what your surgery/nurse is like.

Hope it gets found soon, levan!

I've just had to have my coil removed surgically so know a lot about missing threads (am also a practice nurse so it's my job too!)

There are a few options:

  1. It's fallen out and you've not noticed (this does happen!)

  2. It's still in place but the strings have retracted into your uterus so you can't check it's there

  3. It's perforated your uterus - very very rare

Firstly, do not rely on it for contraception. If you have had unprotected sex since your last period you may need the morning after pill just in case. If you plan on having sex then use a condom.

Secondly, I don't think a scan would be done rapidly (it certainly isn't considered urgent in our area) so you may need to wait a while before you find out what's happened to it. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice - have decided to wait and see GP on Friday. Don't need to take morning after pill as pregnancy wouldn't be a disaster - but having said that will be using condoms until I know what's what!
