dh took her to A&E yesterday as she was so bad, doctor checked her over and said he thinks it is constipation (couldn't feel anything suspicious in her tummy)

gave her some liquid - I forget the name, supposed to 'soften stools'

but she has not pooed since Monday and is getting cramps that make me want to cry

I have been loading her up with fruit and veg and liquids

any tips?

thanks

If it happens again you can intervene with a 2g glycerine suppository, available over counter.

A diet too high in fibre can have the opposite effect that you think it might which may have been a cause?

oliveoil · 29/08/2007 13:53

maybe TC but it feels odd saying "no you have eaten enough fruit dd2" when some people have to coax and plead

dd1 is the otherway round

off to do some work now, thanks

Sidge · 29/08/2007 14:47

Hurray!

Glad she has been, hopefully she feels much better now

OO - I'm the same with my 2, they adore fruit.

Avoid too many banana's with her and fruit like plums, with skins are best for the bowel.

Glad she's feeling better now OO

I'm taking my ds (1 YO) to GP on Fri coz he straining that bad, he sticks his fingers down his throat to make himself gip and does it so much he is physically sick!

Kay - Is this ongoing?

Well maybe start him on nasty sticky lactulose. It draws water into the stool so softens it and helps him pass it.

However it never really worked for me, and isn't a laxative. The best stuff is Movicol.

You can use syrup of figs or senacot - both natural laxatives and are effective.

Make sure he drinks as much as poss. Citrus fruits, fruits with skins such as plums (not apples or bananas though)

Dried fruits esp prunes. Try chopping them up and adding to his cereal.

Wheat and oats good so weatabix and porridge for breakfast and wholemeal toast.

Green leafy veggies good so try sneaking spinch into things like (wholemeal) pasta etc.

When serving the pasta drizzle oil (Udo's Choice oil is good but expensive, if not just olive oil will do). It sticks to poo and helps it's passage out iykwim

Rub his tummy, start at bottom, his right, move up, across and down.

Warm baths.

Do exercises together, lie on your back and do pretend riding a bike.

In dire cicumstances glycerine suppositories will get first lot out.

Its come and goes to be honest, but I cant think of anything that changes to cause it/prevent it. Its just so distressing to watch him making himself sick, just to poo.
I think i'll ask the doc for Movical.

kay - is he straining or desperately trying to hold it in?

DD2 was trying to hold it in so much and managed quite successfully. only movicol sorted her out, broke the cycle and now she is generally fine. i have to make sure she drinks prune juice (there's one with apple juice which she drinks happily), dried apricots and innocent smoothies. without them she gets blocked up despite a generally good diet. she did have a problem with dairy when a baby and i think it all started from then.

the GP will recommend you give lactulose as many times a day as necessary to get his poos to a mushy consistency that he can't hold in. they don't really seem to like prescribing movicol (expensive?) so you may need to insist / tell him lactulose isn't working!

thomcat · 29/08/2007 21:05

I was just coming back to say the same thing, say you bought lactulose and you have to have movicol.

I was given lactulose for years, kept telling them it didn't work and only knew to sk for movicol through the SN's section on mumsnet.

kay1981 · 31/08/2007 10:21

He's definiately not trying to hold it in, he seems to be really trying to force it out. I've been giving him lactalose since wednesday now and it takes 3-4 days to get into their system, so I'll continue over the weekend with it and if no improvement, i'll go to see gp next week.

I'm definately not going to give up on this, is there a chance he could be damaging his insides with all the straining or could he develop piles or something?

Its so hard to watch

Just another thing, my GP is fantastic, she is a mum of 3 herself, (her youngest only 2 months old than my DS) and was a paediatrition (sp) at our local hospital before coming to our surgery, so I think she'll understand.

DS1 has the Movicol and it's great stuff. He needs to take it continuosly for 10-14 days then he's fine It's about every 3-4 months he has to do that.
