My aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Had 2 different types bizarrely, 1 in each lung. Had 1/3 of each removed about 10 months ago.
4 months ago she started having abdominal pains, weight loss, lack of appetite. Went to GP 3 times before they even did some bloods. Liver enzymes through the roof. Told her she was drinking too much. Stop drinking, we will retest. Results higher. Told we don't believe you have stopped drinking, will do a retest.
Went through the same perfomance 3 times. Eventually nurse doing some more bloods was concerned enough to book her an emergency appointment with GP next day. GP asked why she was there. Aunt said concerned with symptoms and blood work I have cancer again. Was told 'I can't possibly refer every patient that is overly anxious and believes Dr Google over a qualified GP to have expensive and unnecessary tests'.
3 days later aunt bringing up blood, rushed to hospital, in for 4 days and they have found a 7mm lesion in her liver, looking increasingly likely to be cancerous. Consultants at hospital furious, said she should have been referred at the first blood test and he is making his own investigations.
Friend had high white blood cells for 2 ywars with family history of leukaemia. Only just started investigating.
Sister went 3 times with a lump in her neck. Was told it was because she was run down, diagnosed with thyroid cancer 6 months later.
Niece had about 12 seizures from age 12 months to 3. The last 2 seizures resulted in life support after being put into a medically induced coma. Persistently fobbed off by GP as being prone to fertile convulsions.
DH, back and forwards to GP for 4 years with high BP. Was told eventually he had white coat syndrome. 3 months later he had a heart attack due to blocked arteries and had 2 stents fitted.
Also DH, back and forwards with stomach pains, intermittent diarrhoea, vomiting. Told IBS. He had diverticulitis. An abscess ruptured, his bowel burst and the only reason he is still alive is because the pain from his burst appendix caused a hospital admission.
I fully support the NHS. But you need to be able to fight for yourself and your family sometimes. If something doesn't add up you need to push. If any of my dcs or dh have symptoms that are of something nasty or something doesn't add up I will be prepared to get 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions if necessary.
