DH high triglcerides

Hi DH went to an over 40s health check and these are the results below. The only abnormal one was high triglycerides. When he rang up to try to make an appointment with a gp to discuss the abnormal result, he was told quite rudely by the receptionist he didn't need an appointment, despite the triglyceride levels being high.

Blood pressure, pulse, Hbac1, Hbac1 alligned, non ldl cholesterol, plasma creatinine, renal profile (Na and K level), serum lipids; plasma total cholesterol, plasma triglyceride level (this was abnormal 4.18mmol/L should have been between 0.55 and 1.9 ), plasma hdl cholesterol, plasma ldl cholesterol, total cholesterol hdl level .

He also had liver function tests that were normal as well as a full blood count and nucleated rbc count and % nucleated rbcs.

Is this right that he should just carry on or does he need to see his gp zbout the high triglycerides. The receptionists at our practice do hzve a bit of a complex turning people away from appointments. His regular gp retired jjst before X'mas too, the bloods were done on the 21st.

Any advice much appreciated.

Don't worry that if the GP wanted to see your DH they would get in touch with him or the receptionist would have had a note from the doctor to ask him to make an appointment to discuss when he phoned for the results. In any case he can always make appointment himself to see the doctor they cannot refuse it.

Hi OP
Raised triglycerides can be due to a diet high in sugar or drinking a lot of alcohol
Also some medication can cause them to go up. Rarely it could be familial.
Did your DH have pre Christmas drinks the day before the blood test?
Do get a GP appointment as it can be a cardiac risk factor. The receptionist sounds awful, good luck.

I hope so Oldmum55, he did try to make an appointment as the triglyceride levels were too high. He had looked on patient access to see the results, but the receptionist wouldn't give him an appointment, she said it wasn't needed. Wiglio yes he did have xmas drinks the day before, so I hope it is that. His Mum had diabetes so am a bit worried about that. I will try again to get him a GP appointment, thank you both for replying. Tbh he only goes to the gp about every 3 years so it is not like he is there all the time.

Well I completed the online form 'ask a doctor a question', wanted to avoid the receptionist so hopefully he will get an appointment.

If his hba1c was normal, he's not diabetic.
His triglycerides are elevated, these are bad fats, usually related to diet or lifestyle issues i.e. Smoking, excess alcohol, poor diet etc. The results usually cover three previous months so a few drinks the day before will be largely irrelevant. The balance of the good and bad fats/the ratio is key. You don't say what this is. The GP should have checked it.
Raised lipids are only one factor in cardiovascular disease risk. Smoking, alcohol, diabetes, BP etc are all involved in calculating his risk. Was he told what this was as a % over ten years?
Just get him to make a GP appt about it if he's that worried and say it's 'personal'. He probably ñeeds diet and lifestyle advice and repeat test in three months at least.

@cptartapp thank you for replying. He doesn't smoke, rarely drinks and it very fit. His regular GP left just after Christmas, so maybe that is why we haven't heard anything. We both tried to make an appointment with him, but the receptionist wouldn't let us so as I said earlier we have a thing on Patient Access where you can send a doctor a message so I did.

No he wasn't told it was over 10 years. Yes I do think some of it might be diet, he eats fairly well, but drinks those Weetabix on the go breakfast drinks as he is always in a rush in the morning, which have a lot of sugar. I have hopefully attatched the results. Thanks again.

i'm not a doctor but a practice nurse that does health checks like this. With those lipids and in the absence of any other risk factor (e.g., high blood pressure) I would give diet and lifestyle advice and recheck in three months.
Just make a routine GP appt if he feels he needs more guidance re the diet etc. You don't need to tell the receptionist what the appt is for. Or book it online.

Will do thanks @cptartapp Flowers
