Ovarian pain - normal or not?

Yesterday afternoon I started getting a moderately severe pain in what felt like my left ovary. If labour is an 8 or 9 on the pain scale, this was about a 6 or 7. It then spread across my abdomen and in to my bum. The pain then quickly subsided in to a dull ache. I saw a doctor yesterday evening who basically shrugged his shoulders and said it was one of those things. Probably ovulation pain.

Today my whole abdomen is tender and very swollen - I look about 5 months pregnant. Anyone else experienced anything like this? Is it normal or should I pursue it with the GP?

I do get this every month with ovulation. However, the more I talk to people the more I start to think it’s not normal. I do have PCO (but ovulate regularly) and it might be that. It’s crazy bloating, intense pain (worse that period pain) and sometimes affects me with spasms in my backside. The pain can last a couple of days. And it’s actually pretty hard to live a normal life during those days.

It sounds like a sign of endometriosis. Have a look at www.endometriosis-uk.org.

CointreauVersial · 06/01/2020 18:46

Could it be an ectopic pregnancy? (I'm not a doctor, by the way, just thinking what it could be). But presumably the real doctor you saw yesterday would have discounted that.

Squashpocket · 06/01/2020 18:49

Cointreau It's about 3 weeks since my last period, so probably not pregnant, although I haven't taken a test.

LittleLongDog this is the first time I've had anything like this. If it was endo wouldn't I have had other symptoms before now?

Also possibly relevant, I have had a copper coil for the last 18 months, which has caused long, heavy, painful periods, but never any issues with ovulation pain. Prior to the coil my periods were 4-5 days, no pain, fairly light. Could it be the coil?

Hi, poss do preg test as ectopics can cause these symptoms.

Squashpocket · 06/01/2020 20:03

I could do a test tomorrow just to see, but I don't feel pregnant.

Could it be a cyst?

I get pain every month! Once I passed out. I did have a cyst so could be that. You could push for a scan. Cyst gone but I still get some pain. I have the coil so that may make it worse.

Ovulation pain is a thing though unfortunately. There’s a name for it in German. Mittleschmerzen...

MrsHardbroom · 06/01/2020 21:17

I'm not a doctor but your symptoms sound similar to a friend of mine who had an ectopic. Was your recent period normal for you? And have you had any bleeding while this pain has been going on or pain in your shoulder? Are you feeling okay in yourself? Have a read of the NHS page on ectopic pregnancy and if any of it seems suspicious then I'd prob seek medical advice

Delatron · 06/01/2020 21:25

My ovulation pain developed after having the copper coil but I think you should go back to docs and pursue if you are still in pain and have a swollen abdomen.

Squashpocket · 06/01/2020 21:35

No shoulder pain, just a very bloated and sore abdomen. I feel a bit more tired than usual but that's all.

I've never experienced more than a mild twinge with ovulation. Hopefully this was a one off, I'm not sure I could cope with this every month Shock

It could be a small functional cyst bursting. If your symptoms go away soon, it is just one of those things that happens occasionally.

However, if you continue to be in pain or very swollen, consider going back to the doctor. I regularly had a lot of swelling with endometriosis (the 5 months pregnancy type you describe) and wouldn't have gone to the doctor in those circumstances, but it's different if it's a new thing for you. An ultrasound would help identify an unruptured cyst if there is one.

Fredy45 · 06/01/2020 21:53

I have this every month but have a fuckton of scar tissue due to ectopic pregnancies

Just to say though I didn't feel at all pregnant when I was with my ectopics so maybe test just in case?

How are you today OP?
