Has anyone out there had lasek eye surgery? I have very short sight , -9 in one and -10 in the other. Would need lasek rather than lasik and optician thinks I'm possibly suitable now. Has anyone had lasek done recently? Have heard its more painful than lasik.
Thanks

had it done 3 years ago. It was wonderful. An hour after having it done I could see with crystal clarity. I just stared out into my garden for ages as everything looked so crisp and polished iykwim.

I found it to be more uncomfortable than painful. It isn't pleasant having someone mess around with your eyes but you don't actually feel it. It only lasts about 15minutes anyway, so you can bear it.

The results are amazing.

Yes, I had this last November, I went for Lasek rather than Lasik cos its cheaper, but the optician said that it was a safer operation and one he was happier with.
It does hurt afterwards, but its not unbearable, and I found that the advice from the place was spot on; you do need someone to take you (straight) home, and then sit in a dark room as much as poss. I got some spoken word tapes from the library and listened to those instead of watching tv etc for a few days.
I took 5 days off work, and though I prob could have gone back sooner I was glad i didnt have too.
Now, my eyes can be a bit dry sometimes but not enough to really bother me, otherwise I would nevewr know I had ever been short sighted, its great. Would thouroughly reccomend it.

ps the worst bit about the op is smelling the laser burning your eye!!

Pinkchampagne · 27/08/2007 19:27

I had laser eye surgey 10 years back, but I'm not sure what type it was!

Pinkchampagne · 27/08/2007 19:29

It was the older method, where they laser one eye, then you go back at a later date & they do the other.
My sister had the more modern treatment, where they do both eyes at the same time.

i had it done a couple of years ago, the cheaper one-Lasek

pretty much what puppy said, but it did hurt like hell, and the light really hurt it, was ok after a few days, don't regret it for a second, best thing i ever did!

Pinkchampagne · 27/08/2007 19:43

Mine hurt like hell after too. It felt like I had had a load of gravel rubbed into my eye, and I couldn't stand the light for a few days, but they do provide you with strong painkillers.

I don't regret it for a second. I have had perfect eyesight ever since the surgery, and forget that I was once so badly short sighted!

Hi Pinkchampagne
How bad was your eyesight before and which company did you choose?
Thanks everyone - am really considering it, contacts are ok but take time am and pm when you have other things to do! Would need to save though!

My eyesight was pretty poor - I was minus 4.5 in one eye, and minus 6 in the other.

I contacted a local private hospital that I knew offered the surgery (it was quite new at the time), and went in to have a talk with the surgeon & various eye tests to check I was ok to have it done, and was then booked in for the first op 3 months later.
