My dd is due for her first round of MMR next week. After plenty of discussion we are going ahead with it and are ok about the combined option.
When talking to my sister about it she asked me if I was putting my dd on a special "immune system boosting" diet this week - I had never heard of this. She can?t remember where she read about it but does remember that it was some medical bloke in a book. She said that this diet could help your child deal with the potential side effects of the jab more effectively and more quickly - unfortunately she can?t remember any more than this.Despite going through my books and looking on the web, I cannot find anything about this at all.
If anyone has any knowledge about this please let me know asap. If there is any way that I could help prepare her physically then I really want to know about it. Thanks

JayTree, sounds like a load of bobbins to me.
sorry can't be more helpful, but good luck with the jabs, dd had hers at just over 18 mths, no ill effects & hope it's the same for you.

There's this which isn't specific for MMR (it's actually on a cancer site) but the principles are the same.

Or there's www.healthissuesonline.com/Graphics/BodyFrame/Images/PDFs/Immune%20Leaflet%20A5.pdf but you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. WHY CAN'T I DO MULTIPLE LINKS??? GRRR!

A Google search on "immune system" boosting diet brought up lots of sites.

A friend's boy caught viral meningitis after his MMR booster and the consensus was that the MMR had lowered his immune system and left him vulnerable to infections so an immune boosting diet sounds like a good idea.

thanks for the good wishes, Bundle. Soup Dragon - I am soo thick - I was searching under MMR and then looking for immune sysytem diets, didn?t think to look under the immune system first, durrr. Thanks for taking time to give me a couple of links - I appreciate it and will have a look right now.
LOL.

JayTree, sorry just realised how dismissive I sounded about what you'd heard! I believe that current thinking about the immune system in children is that limited exposure eg with other children in daycare helps to boost the immune system. similarly children who grow up with cats/dogs have half as much asthma as those who don't. I'd have thought an immune-boosting diet was one in which there was plenty fresh fruit/veg and whatever form of protein/fats you choose for healthy growth. You can't anticipate everything thought - I nearly took dd @ 15 mths, but everything happened on the day of the clinic so I didn't - thank goodness, because she'd got chickenpox, but had yet to sprout the spots!

I've ummed and ahed about MMR and will probably end up taking DS2 (18 months today - eek!) for his MMR when we get back from holiday. It will end up being a decision made by apathy as the MMR is the easiest route and I don't want him to be unvaccinated when he starts nursery in January.

I'd not thought of boosting his immune system by diet before he has it though and will certainly look at this, especially following my friends experience.

However, I suspect he has a pretty good immune system as he's been exposed to chicken pox 3 times and neither he or his brother have caught it! Their last exposure was over 3 weeks ago.

I didn't have dd vaxxed. She had her baby ones (ds had all of his) but not MMR won't be having any more.

Have a look at the links I posted below. Look at the ingredients in some of the vaccines.

Remember that there is no hurry to have the vaccines, so you can take as long as you like to make the decision. Read as much about it as you can on both sidea and make an INFORMED decision, not one based solely on government propoganda.

Ooops, sorry wrong thread.

YPUK · 06/09/2002 14:05

jaytree, if you do give the mmr, give your child loads of vitamin c starting asap until 2 weeks after the vaccination. the vitamin c will help the immune system cope with the assault. hth.

JayTree · 06/09/2002 14:29

Thanks for this tip YPUK - I have just posted a message to you on the other MMR link and I guess I feel quite strongly about the whole aggressive debate thing at the moment . Despite this, I do appreciate your advice and will start boosting my dd?s vit. C levels a little right away.
