Would you go to the doctors over a cough?

There's some kind of lurgy going round my house at the moment, mainly just coughing, coldy type symptoms with feeling really hot. My family member has had it for 2 days and got an appointment with the GP because of it. Would you say this is a good enough reason to go to thw doctors? I can't get an appointment to see the GP about other things for months, even for my 2 year old! Would you go to the doctors for a cough/cold?

The missing chocolates were those little Lindt ball things - we have eight million boxes of other chocs but those were the ones I wanted I have eaten some Vienetta instead Smile

I hope you manage to get an appointment - the vast majority of our GP receptionists are lovely but there is one who is just horrible and I had a nightmare with her once. After the (very good) MN advice of the Practice Manager, I got a GP appointment straightaway (and got sent straight to hospital, so I'm hoping Horrible Receptionist got her arse severely kicked)

Green phlegm doesn't necessarily mean infection. It means your body is fighting infection. However people with chronic conditions eg copd, asthma antibiotics and maybe steroids may be prescribed.

A couple of years back I had the flu. A month later I still had a nasty cough, turned out I had developed pneumonia.

no i wouldn't, i m in my 20s and i have asthma which is mild, i'd only go if my usual medication wasn't working and it seemed like I needed oral steroids .

I broke a rib from a cough last year but a&e said it was bad luck really.

No...

Because of my history with chest infections and pleurisy, I would go if I had other symptoms. A few times my chest pain has been a serious infection but no cough.

For a simple cough and no other symptoms no. A chesty sounding cough yes.

3 weeks maybe yes, 2 days almost inconceivable to try to see GP. Pharmacist sure, if it's annoying.

DH had a cough that persisted for 6 weeks before we asked for medical advice... got diagnosed as various things & cleared up after it was finally labeled pneumonia.
