Never felt so ill in my life it came all of a sudden yesterday, sneezing, pressure headaches, fever, sweating, weak and dizzy, kidneys hurting. Dp has been the same but seems to be a bit better today. Girls unwell with fever and snotty too. I feel so bad I just want to crawl into bet but obviously you can't with unwel children. Is this A&E Worthy? I work for the NHS so always conscious of going unless I really need to I don't even know what they could do.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/

Unlikely that A&E appropriate. Website above has info on when to call 111 (and when might need out of hours doc - rather than A&E).

It is horrendous. Have your children been vaccinated? I pay each year to be done, younger dcs get it at school and also pay for older dd now.

Lindy2 · 27/12/2019 17:20

I don't think you need A&E for flu unless you have other health conditions that put you at risk. If you do have other conditions then I expect you would have been vaccinated.

Treat at home with rest, paracetamol and plenty of fluids. Hopefully you will start to feel better after a few days.

How old are your children? If they have had the flu vaccine then hopefully they will avoid it.

helpamummaout · 27/12/2019 17:24

We've had our flu jabs but the girls haven't, they've just gone 2 I didn't realise children this young could have it or I would of taken them for it. Okay will call 111 if it gets no better. I think that's the thing we've got no help so no chance to rest

Please don't go a A&E for flu. You'll infect so many vulnerable people (especially the kids as they touch everything and don't cover their mouths usually when coughing etc).

Treat at home, it's awful and you can't usually get out of bed and can last a week or two but you're not dying.

UncomfortableSilence · 27/12/2019 19:48

I had very similar last week, think I'm at the tail end of it now.

You don't need A&E and you will spread it to vulnerable people, unless of course you have underlying health conditions.

Treat the symptoms, keep well hydrated, rest as much as possible with young kids and ride it out I'm afraid.

We’re in the same position and I have thrown out the rule book and we are watching Disney movies on ipads and eating junk food in bed until it passes. It won’t harm them to have a few down days of technology and it takes the mind off feeling rubbish

Lougle · 27/12/2019 19:55

There are definite times you should seek help with flu. If you have difficulty breathing, can't keep fluids down or stop passing urine, etc. However, in most cases you can just self-treat at home.

hotstepper4 · 27/12/2019 21:59

I had to go to a&e when I had flu, but that was because my eipiglottis swelled up and I couldn't swallow at all, then began finding it difficult to breathe. I had to have intravenous steroids. I think that's rare though. You have my sympathy, it was probably the worst I've ever felt.

WorldsOnFire · 27/12/2019 22:04

My DH (hospital Dr) frequently says ‘If you’re using your phone/tablet/tv...it’s not flu it’s a virus/bad cold.

Apparently when you get actual flu you’re basically incapacitated and just can’t get out of bed. Caring for small children would be basically impossible and at 2, if it were flu, I imagine they’d be so unwell they’d require hospitalisation.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 27/12/2019 22:16

I was hospitalised with pneumonia after a nasty bout of flu and still able to use my phone Hmm

My DS4 was recently swabbed for flu, and while he was indeed very poorly, didn’t require a stay in hospital.

Lougle · 27/12/2019 22:34

WorldsOnFire your DH needs to remember that he only ever sees Flu patients who are ill enough to be hospitalised. I work in ICU and it really skews your perception when you're surrounded by the sickest patients in the hospital. Despite that, a good proportion of our ITU patients are still able to look at their phones.

Abibranning · 27/12/2019 22:46

I had it at the end of November. Swore it couldn't be flu as had been vaccinated, but spoke to Dr who confirmed that I could still have flu as symptoms fitted and to just rest and keep fluids up until it was over. I felt awful, but even being an asthmatic there was no need for any additional help.

Dontdisturbmenow · 28/12/2019 07:13

If you are up and still going on, it's not flu. There is a nasty virus going about though that does knock you for two and give all the symptoms you've exhibited. OH, myself and DS have had it, two weeks later and I'm still laughing and suffer from sinus pressure. Getting frustrating, but even at its worse, it wasn't flu.

DD had the flu 2 years ago and she was in bed, so weak, she couldn't get up and just going to the toilet was an effort. She forced herself to drink but ate nothing for a week. I knew then how much worse the flu was.
